2008 Presidential Dollar Coin Value: How Much Is It Worth?

2008 Presidential Dollar Coin Value: How Much Is It Worth?

The 2008 Presidential Dollar series covers four presidents — James Monroe, John Quincy Adams, Andrew Jackson, and Martin Van Buren — struck at Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco. Guide estimates for explicitly listed grades range from about $4.61 in MS65 for business strikes to $4.96 in PR65 for proofs.

Those are not guaranteed offers, and your coin's actual value depends on its specific mint, finish, and condition. Most circulated examples trade near face value, but satin-finish mint set coins and proofs deserve a closer look.

Which 2008 Presidential Dollar Versions Are Worth Money?

  • Satin-finish P and D coins for all four presidents (Positions A and B) were issued only in collector mint sets and require individual assessment for value.
  • S-mint proofs of Monroe, Adams, Jackson, and Van Buren carry a guide estimate of about $4.96 at PR65.
  • Business-strike P and D coins in MS65 condition are estimated near $4.61 per guide, well above face value in that grade.
  • Confirm your coin's finish type — business, satin, or proof — before assuming any value, since they are priced on different scales.

Step 1: Identify Your 2008 Presidential Dollar Mint Mark and Version

2008 Presidential Dollars Coin mint and version comparison

2008 Presidential Dollars version comparison

Start with the edge. The actual year of issue (2008) and the mintmark (P, D, or S) are incised into the edge lettering — not on the face.

The dates shown next to the president's portrait are his years in office, not the minting year. A lot of people confuse these.

The obverse portrait tells you which president you have. Monroe, Adams, Jackson, and Van Buren each have distinct likenesses.

The reverse is the same Statue of Liberty torch design shared across the series.

All 2008 Presidential Dollars are manganese-brass clad, weighing 8.10 grams. The alloy is 88.5% copper, 6% zinc, 3.5% manganese, and 2% nickel overall.

Edge lettering orientation comes in two normal positions, A and B. If you hold the obverse facing you and the edge text reads normally from the bottom, that is Position A; if it reads from the top, Position B.

Both are standard production and neither is an error.

Three finish types exist for 2008: regular business strikes from P and D, satin-finish specimens included in collector mint sets from P and D, and proof strikes from S. Business strikes have a standard luster.

Satin coins show a soft, matte-like sheen distinct from both proofs and business strikes. Proofs have mirrored fields and sharp detail.

Step 2: Check Your 2008 Presidential Dollar Grade

2008 Presidential Dollars numeric grading guide

Focus on the portrait first. On a lightly circulated coin, the cheek, brow, and hair above the ear lose definition earliest.

Check the high points of the Statue of Liberty torch and arm on the reverse for matching wear.

A coin grading around AU (About Uncirculated, roughly AU50–AU58) will show only slight friction on those highest points, with most original luster intact. Mint State coins (MS60 and up) should have no wear at all, though they may carry contact marks from handling.

Satin-finish coins grade differently from business strikes because their surface texture masks small contact marks. Compare only against other satin-finish examples.

Proof coins should be evaluated for hairlines and haze, not circulation wear — a proof is a manufacturing method, not a grade above Mint State.

Use the comparison image to see how wear progresses on the same coin type across circulated, AU, and Mint State levels, and keep proof examples in a separate mental category.

Step 3: Check 2008 Presidential Dollar Value by Mint and Version

2008 Presidential Dollar — P — James Monroe — Position A

2008 Presidential Dollar Coin — P — James Monroe — Position A, obverse and reverse, with date and mint-location details

This is a regular Philadelphia business strike featuring James Monroe's portrait, with edge lettering in Position A orientation. The "P" mintmark and the year 2008 appear on the edge.

Guide estimates place this coin at about $4.61 in MS65. Circulated examples are generally worth face value.

Confirm the president by the portrait and check the edge for the mintmark rather than relying on the service-year dates beside the image.

2008 Presidential Dollar — P — James Monroe — satin Position A

2008 Presidential Dollar Coin — P — James Monroe — satin Position A, obverse and reverse, with date and mint-location details

The satin-finish version of the P-mint James Monroe dollar in Position A came packaged in the 2008 U.S. Mint uncirculated coin set. Its surface has a distinctive soft, even sheen that differs from the brighter luster of a business strike.

No guide price is adopted for this version, so value depends on individual assessment considering authenticated identity, condition, and any verified errors. If you have one still in its original mint set holder, that helps confirm the finish.

2008 Presidential Dollar Coin — P — James Monroe — satin Position B, obverse and reverse, with date and mint-location details

This is the satin-finish Philadelphia Monroe dollar in Position B orientation, found only in 2008 collector mint sets. The matte-like surface texture is the key identifier separating it from a standard business strike.

No supported guide price is available, so each coin's worth depends on its authenticated identity, preservation, and whether any verified errors are present. Comparing it side by side with a business strike makes the finish difference obvious.

San Francisco proof of the James Monroe dollar, struck with polished dies on specially prepared planchets. The fields should be mirror-like, with frosted raised design elements.

The "S" mintmark appears on the edge. A guide estimate puts this at about $4.96 in PR65.

Proof is a finish, not a grade above Mint State, so even a proof can have hairlines or haze that lower its grade. These were sold in the 2008 Presidential Dollar proof set.
