2016 Presidential Dollar Coin Value: How Much Is It Worth?

2016 Presidential Dollar Coin Value: How Much Is It Worth?

The 2016 Presidential Dollar series honored Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford and Ronald Reagan across multiple mint and finish combinations. Guide estimates for explicitly listed grades range from about $10.00 to $12.00, depending on the mint, design and finish.

Most circulated examples trade near face value, so identifying your specific version matters before assuming any premium.

Fast Way to Identify Your 2016 Presidential Dollar

Upload clear photos of your coin's front and back, and we can help with a preliminary identification. The obverse portrait tells you which president you have, while the edge lettering reveals the actual 2016 date and mintmark.

Both details are essential for sorting your coin into the right version.

Which 2016 Presidential Dollar Versions Are Worth Money?

  • S-mint proof versions of Nixon, Ford and Reagan carry guide estimates around $11.00 in PR65, above the $10.00 business-strike baseline.
  • Gerald Ford and Ronald Reagan issues from P and D mints are estimated at $12.00 in MS65, slightly above the Nixon versions.
  • The S-mint Ronald Reagan reverse proof, from the Coin and Chronicles set, is a distinct collector finish worth individual assessment based on authenticated condition.
  • Don't assume a Position A or Position B edge orientation adds value; both are standard production variants.

Step 1: Identify Your 2016 Presidential Dollar Mint Mark and Version

2016 Presidential Dollars Coin mint and version comparison

2016 Presidential Dollars version comparison

Start with the portrait. Nixon, Ford and Reagan each have distinct obverse designs, and you need to match yours before anything else.

The mintmark and date are on the edge, not the face. Look for a small P, D or S incused into the edge lettering alongside "2016." The years shown on the obverse next to the president's name are his dates of service, not the year the coin was struck, so don't confuse them.

The coin is manganese-brass clad, composed of 88.5% copper, 6% zinc, 3.5% manganese and 2% nickel, weighing 8.10 grams. It has a golden color that can darken or tone over time.

Position A and Position B refer to the orientation of the edge lettering relative to the obverse. If you hold the coin with the president facing up and the edge reads normally, that's Position A.

If you flip it and the edge reads normally from the reverse side, that's Position B. Both are normal production varieties, not errors.

Proof strikes from San Francisco have mirror-like fields and frosted devices, clearly different from the satin or business-strike appearance of P and D mint coins. The Ronald Reagan reverse proof flips that contrast, with frosted fields and mirror-like devices, and was issued in a special Coin and Chronicles set.

Step 2: Check Your 2016 Presidential Dollar Grade

2016 Presidential Dollars numeric grading guide

Focus on the highest points of the presidential portrait: the cheekbone, hair detail and any raised facial features. On the reverse, check the Statue of Liberty's torch and crown for signs of wear.

A coin that spent time in circulation will show flattening on those areas first.

Separate your circulated coins from uncirculated ones by looking for original mint luster across the entire surface. An AU piece might retain most of its luster but show slight friction on the cheek.

A true Mint State coin has no wear at all, only possible bag marks from storage.

Proofs and special finishes need a different standard. Hairline scratches from mishandling are the main concern, not wear from circulation.

Compare your coin against the same-type grading reference image to gauge where it falls.

Step 3: Check 2016 Presidential Dollar Value by Mint and Version

2016 Presidential Dollar — P — Richard Nixon — Position A

2016 Presidential Dollar Coin — P — Richard Nixon — Position A, obverse and reverse, with date and mint-location details

This is the Philadelphia-mint Nixon dollar with Position A edge lettering. The obverse shows Nixon's portrait, and the edge carries "2016" and a small "P" mintmark.

Position A means the edge lettering reads normally when the obverse faces up. A guide estimate places this at about $10.00 in MS65.

Circulated examples are generally worth face value.

2016 Presidential Dollar — S — Richard Nixon — proof

2016 Presidential Dollar Coin — S — Richard Nixon — proof, obverse and reverse, with date and mint-location details

The San Francisco proof Nixon dollar has sharply struck, mirrored fields and frosted portrait details that set it apart from any business strike. These were sold in collector proof sets, not released into circulation.

Handling hairlines are the main condition concern for proofs.

Don't confuse Ford's presidential service dates on the obverse with the actual striking year.

2016 Presidential Dollar — S — Ronald Reagan — reverse proof

2016 Presidential Dollar Coin — S — Ronald Reagan — reverse proof, obverse and reverse, with date and mint-location details

The reverse proof Ronald Reagan dollar is the standout of the 2016 Presidential Dollar series. It was issued as part of a Coin and Chronicles set, and its finish is the visual opposite of a standard proof: the fields are frosted while the devices are mirrored.

This makes it immediately distinct from every other version in the series. The coin itself remains manganese-brass clad, the same composition as business strikes.

No specific guide price is adopted for this version, so its value depends on individual assessment based on authenticated identity and condition. If you believe you have one, professional authentication is worthwhile.
