2013 Presidential Dollar Coin Value: How Much Is It Worth?

2013 Presidential Dollar Coin Value: How Much Is It Worth?

The 2013 Presidential Dollar series covers four presidents — William McKinley, Theodore Roosevelt, William Howard Taft and Woodrow Wilson — across Philadelphia, Denver and San Francisco mints. Guide estimates for these coins range from about $5.63 in MS65 for business strikes to $8.65 in PR65 for San Francisco proofs.

Most circulated examples are worth face value, so identifying your coin's mint, design and finish matters before assuming any premium.

Fast Way to Identify Your 2013 Presidential Dollar

Upload clear photos of both the front and back of your 2013 Presidential Dollar for a preliminary identification. The portrait on the obverse tells you which president you have, but the mintmark and date live on the edge, so a well-lit edge shot helps too.

This step narrows down which of the twenty versions you may be holding.

Which 2013 Presidential Dollar Versions Are Worth Money?

  • S-mint William McKinley proof — guide estimate around $8.65 in PR65, a collector finish worth more than business strikes.
  • S-mint Theodore Roosevelt proof — same PR65 guide estimate of about $8.65; look for the S mintmark on the edge.
  • S-mint William Howard Taft proof — PR65 guide value near $8.65; mirror-like fields distinguish it from circulation issues.
  • S-mint Woodrow Wilson proof — also guided at roughly $8.65 in PR65; sold only in proof sets, not released for commerce.

Step 1: Identify Your 2013 Presidential Dollar Mint Mark and Version

2013 Presidential Dollars Coin mint and version comparison

2013 Presidential Dollars version comparison

Start with the obverse portrait. Each of the four 2013 presidents has a distinct likeness: McKinley, Roosevelt, Taft or Wilson.

The reverse on all four is the same Statue of Liberty design.

The edge is where the real action is. Flip your coin on its side to find the actual minting year (2013) and the mintmark — P for Philadelphia, D for Denver, or S for San Francisco.

The dates flanking the president's name on the obverse are his years of service, not the year your coin was struck. This trips people up constantly.

Edge lettering orientation determines Position A or Position B. If you hold the obverse facing you and the edge text reads normally from left to right, that is Position A; if the text is upside-down relative to the obverse, that is Position B.

Both positions are normal production variants, not errors.

The coin itself is manganese-brass clad, weighing 8.10 grams, with an overall composition of 88.5% copper, 6% zinc, 3.5% manganese and 2% nickel. S-mint coins are collector proofs struck with a mirror-like finish and sold in sets, not released into circulation.

Step 2: Check Your 2013 Presidential Dollar Grade

2013 Presidential Dollars numeric grading guide

Focus on the president's cheek, hair detail and the high points of the portrait. On a well-preserved business strike these areas retain full luster with no contact marks or rub.

A coin that has circulated will show flattening on the cheekbone and the highest hair strands first.

On the reverse, check the Statue of Liberty's torch and raised arm for wear. These are the first spots to soften.

For proofs, look for hairline scratches from handling rather than wear from circulation. A proof with heavy hairlines grades lower than one with clean, reflective fields.

Use the comparison image to see the difference between a circulated coin, an About Uncirculated example and a full Mint State piece — and keep proof evaluation separate since it is a different finish entirely.

Step 3: Check 2013 Presidential Dollar Value by Mint and Version

2013 Presidential Dollar — P — William McKinley — Position A

2013 Presidential Dollar Coin — P — William McKinley — Position A, obverse and reverse, with date and mint-location details

This is the Philadelphia-mint McKinley dollar with Position A edge lettering — meaning the incuse text reads normally when the obverse faces you. The portrait shows McKinley's likeness, and his presidential service dates appear on the obverse, not the minting year.

Check the edge for a P mintmark and the 2013 date. A USA Coin Book guide estimate places this coin at about $5.63 in MS65 grade.

Circulated examples are generally worth face value.

Same Philadelphia McKinley dollar as Position A, but with the edge lettering inverted relative to the obverse — that is Position B. This is a normal manufacturing orientation, not an error.

The portrait, composition and weight are identical. The USA Coin Book guide estimate is also about $5.63 in MS65.

There is no premium difference between Position A and Position B for this issue.

The Denver-mint McKinley dollar in Position A carries a D mintmark on its edge alongside the 2013 date. The obverse portrait and reverse Statue of Liberty are the same as the Philadelphia version.

At MS65, the USA Coin Book guide estimate is around $5.63. Circulated pieces are common and spend at a dollar.

Look for original golden luster with no marks on the cheek to justify a higher grade.

Denver McKinley in Position B — edge text is upside-down relative to the obverse. Again, perfectly normal.

Same manganese-brass clad composition at 8.10 grams. The guide estimate at MS65 is approximately $5.63.

If your coin shows wear on McKinley's hair or cheek, it grades below MS65 and is likely worth its face value.

2013 Presidential Dollar — S — William McKinley — proof

2013 Presidential Dollar Coin — S — William McKinley — proof, obverse and reverse, with date and mint-location details

The San Francisco proof McKinley dollar is a collector-only issue sold in proof sets, not released into general circulation. It carries an S mintmark on the edge and has mirror-like fields with frosted design elements — a sharper, more refined look than business strikes.

The USA Coin Book guide estimate is about $8.65 in PR65. Because it was handled less than a circulation coin, many survive in high proof grades.

Still, hairlines from careless storage or removal from the original case can lower the grade. This is the McKinley version most likely to carry a modest premium over face value.

2013 Presidential Dollar — P — Theodore Roosevelt — Position A

2013 Presidential Dollar Coin — P — Theodore Roosevelt — Position A, obverse and reverse, with date and mint-location details

Philadelphia-mint Theodore Roosevelt dollar, Position A. Roosevelt's distinctive portrait — glasses and all — makes this one easy to spot.

The edge reads normally when the obverse faces you. Guide estimate from USA Coin Book is around $5.63 at MS65.

Circulated examples trade at face value. Look for full luster and sharp detail on Roosevelt's pince-nez frames to confirm a higher-grade coin.

The San Francisco proof Theodore Roosevelt dollar is another collector-only striking with an S mintmark on the edge. Its mirror fields and frosted portrait give it a distinctive look that business strikes simply do not have.

At PR65, the USA Coin Book guide estimate is approximately $8.65. Proof coins can still pick up hairlines from improper handling, which drops the grade.

If yours came from an original sealed proof set and has never been touched, it likely grades well above PR65.

Philadelphia-mint William Howard Taft dollar, Position A. Taft's broad portrait is the giveaway here.

The edge lettering reads upright when the obverse faces you. At MS65, the USA Coin Book guide estimate is about $5.63.

These were struck in quantity and most survivors show at least minor bag marks. A clean example with full original golden luster would be the exception, not the rule.

The San Francisco proof Taft dollar was struck exclusively for collectors. Its mirror-finish fields and frosted design elements set it apart from any business strike.

The S mintmark sits on the edge. At PR65 the USA Coin Book guide estimate is about $8.65.

Hairlines from handling are the primary grade reducer on proof Presidential Dollars. If your coin still rests in its original government packaging, the surfaces are likely well preserved.

2013 Presidential Dollar Error List

1. 2013 Presidential Dollar — Weak / Partial Edge Lettering

Weak or partial edge lettering on a 2013 Presidential Dollar means some or all of the incuse inscriptions — date, mintmark, motto — are unusually faint or incomplete around the coin's circumference. To check, slowly rotate the edge under a good light and look for areas where letters trail off or are barely impressed into the metal.

This has been reported on 2013 Presidential Dollars, though it can occur on any mint or design in the series. Do not assume a specific mint is affected without confirming the mintmark on the edge.

Normal shallow lettering from ordinary wear or deliberate abrasion can mimic this error, so compare your coin's edge to a known normal example. Condition, the extent of the missing lettering, and the specific design all affect what a given coin might be worth — no single figure covers all cases.

2. 2013 Presidential Dollar — Doubled Edge Lettering

Doubled edge lettering occurs when the incuse inscriptions are struck twice, producing two overlapping or offset sets of letters around the circumference. On a genuine doubled-edge 2013 Presidential Dollar, you can trace two complete or nearly complete impressions of the date, mintmark and motto.

This has been reported on the 2013 series. Be careful not to confuse it with normal Position A versus Position B orientation — those are single impressions in different directions, not doubled text.

Reflections, lighting tricks and comparing two separate photos can also create the illusion of doubling. Examine the actual coin under magnification and rotate it fully.

The value of a confirmed doubled-edge example depends on the clarity of the doubling, the coin's condition and the specific president and mint involved.

3. 2013 Presidential Dollar — Die Crack / Die Chip

Die cracks show up as thin raised lines running across the coin's surface, formed when a crack in the steel die transfers as a ridge of metal during striking. A die chip is a small raised blob — a piece of the die broke away, leaving a void that fills with metal.

If a crack reaches the rim and a chunk of the die collapses, it becomes a cud — a larger raised area at the edge.

These have been reported on 2013 Presidential Dollars. The key diagnostic is that die cracks and chips are raised, not incised.

Scratches, corrosion lines and foreign material sitting on the surface are recessed or sit on top and can be mistaken for die damage. Use magnification and feel the surface carefully.

Value depends on the size and location of the crack or chip, the coin's overall condition, and the specific design and mint.

4. 2013 Presidential Dollar — Struck-Through Error

A struck-through error happens when foreign material — grease, metal shavings, thread, or other debris — gets between the die and the planchet during striking. The result is a localized depression or incomplete area in the design where the obstruction blocked the full impression.

This has been reported on 2013 Presidential Dollars. Grease-filled dies produce a smooth, shallow missing area, while a retained foreign object might leave a distinct impression of whatever was trapped.

The important distinction: struck-through areas are recessed and lack detail, unlike wear or cleaning damage which tends to be more uniform. Scratches and post-mint damage also differ because they cut across the existing design.

Value depends on how dramatic and identifiable the obstruction impression is, plus the coin's condition and specific mint and design.
