2016 Sacagawea Dollar Coin Value: How Much Is It Worth?

2016 Sacagawea Dollar Coin Value: How Much Is It Worth?

The 2016 Sacagawea Dollar — officially part of the Native American Dollar series — carries the Code Talkers reverse honoring Native American code talkers from World War I and World War II. Guide estimates for explicitly listed grades and versions range from about $6.26 to $10.00, depending on mint, finish and condition.

Most circulated Philadelphia and Denver pieces trade near face value, so the real action is in identifying the special collector finishes and any legitimate errors.

Which 2016 Sacagawea Dollar Versions Are Worth Money?

  • S-mint proof (PR65 guide estimate around $10.00) — the highest listed value among priced versions, struck for collector sets only.
  • S-mint enhanced uncirculated — a special collector finish with distinct surface treatment; value depends on authenticated identity and condition.

Step 1: Identify Your 2016 Sacagawea Dollar Mint Mark and Version

2016 Sacagawea Dollar version comparison

Since 2009, the date and mintmark on Sacagawea dollars moved to the incuse edge lettering. Flip the coin on its side and slowly rotate it to find the year, the mint letter (P, D or S) and "E PLURIBUS UNUM." The golden color comes from the manganese-brass clad composition — 88.5% copper, 6% zinc, 3.5% manganese and 2% nickel — not gold.

The reverse for 2016 depicts two helmeted soldiers with a radio, representing the code talkers. If your reverse shows a different design, you may have a different year's Native American dollar.

Philadelphia and Denver strikes also have a Position A or Position B edge orientation. Hold the obverse upright and rotate the coin along a vertical axis to read the edge: if the edge text reads normally, that is Position A; if the text is upside-down relative to the obverse, it is Position B.

Both positions exist for each mint and carry the same guide value, but collectors sometimes prefer matched sets.

The S-mint coins were struck only for collectors, either as standard proofs or in the special enhanced uncirculated finish. These were never released into circulation.

If you bought it in a sealed Mint product, check the packaging to confirm which finish you have.

Step 2: Check Your 2016 Sacagawea Dollar Grade

2016 Sacagawea Dollar numeric grading guide

On business strikes, start with Sacagawea's cheek and the high points of her hair — these are the first areas to show friction. The baby on her back and the bundle straps also wear early.

A coin with full original luster and no contact marks in the cheek field is a strong Mint State candidate.

For proofs, you are not grading wear so much as surface quality. Look for hairlines, haze or fingerprint damage on the mirrored fields.

The enhanced uncirculated finish has its own distinct surface texture, so compare it against a confirmed example of the same finish rather than judging it by proof or business-strike standards.

Use the comparison image to see the difference between a lightly circulated piece (slight cheek rub, dulled luster), an About Uncirculated coin (trace friction only on the highest points) and a full Mint State example. Proof and enhanced uncirculated pieces should be evaluated separately from circulation strikes.

Step 3: Check 2016 Sacagawea Dollar Value by Mint and Version

2016 Sacagawea Dollar — P — Native American code talkers — Position A

2016 Sacagawea Dollar Coin — P — Native American code talkers — Position A, obverse and reverse

This is the Philadelphia mint business strike with Position A edge lettering. You will find the "P" mintmark incuse on the edge along with the 2016 date.

In Position A the edge text reads normally when you flip the coin top-to-bottom from the obverse side. It is a standard-issue coin made of manganese-brass clad composition weighing 8.10 grams.

A USA Coin Book guide estimate places the MS65 value at about $6.26. Circulated examples are worth face value.

2016 Sacagawea Dollar — P — Native American code talkers — Position B

2016 Sacagawea Dollar Coin — P — Native American code talkers — Position B, obverse and reverse

Same Philadelphia mint business strike as Position A, but the edge lettering is inverted relative to the obverse — that is Position B. The distinction matters mainly to set collectors who want both orientations.

Composition, weight and design are identical to Position A. The MS65 guide estimate is also $6.26 per USA Coin Book.

Unless you are assembling a complete edge-variety set, this trades the same as any other Philly business strike.

2016 Sacagawea Dollar — D — Native American code talkers — Position A

2016 Sacagawea Dollar Coin — D — Native American code talkers — Position A, obverse and reverse

The Denver mint version with Position A edge lettering. Look for the "D" mintmark on the edge.

Denver coins were produced in comparable quantities to Philadelphia strikes and circulate widely. The manganese-brass clad composition and 8.10-gram weight are unchanged.

USA Coin Book lists an MS65 guide estimate of $6.26. Worn pieces are still just a dollar.

2016 Sacagawea Dollar — D — Native American code talkers — Position B

2016 Sacagawea Dollar Coin — D — Native American code talkers — Position B, obverse and reverse

Denver mint, Position B edge lettering. Rotate the coin and you will see the edge text is upside-down relative to the obverse.

Everything else — metal, weight, reverse design — matches the Position A Denver strike. The MS65 guide estimate from USA Coin Book is $6.26.

Position B is not scarcer than Position A in most years, so treat it the same unless a certified population report says otherwise.

2016 Sacagawea Dollar — S — Native American code talkers — proof

2016 Sacagawea Dollar Coin — S — Native American code talkers — proof, obverse and reverse

The San Francisco proof carries mirrored fields and frosted devices, produced exclusively for collector proof sets. It is the same manganese-brass clad composition as the business strikes; buying it inside a silver proof set does not make this dollar silver.

The "S" mintmark appears on the edge. At PR65, the USA Coin Book guide estimate is about $10.00, making it the highest priced version among those with adopted figures.

Verify the proof finish by looking for the sharp contrast between reflective flat areas and the raised frosted design elements. Handling damage or haze will push the grade down quickly.

2016 Sacagawea Dollar — S — Native American code talkers — enhanced uncirculated

2016 Sacagawea Dollar Coin — S — Native American code talkers — enhanced uncirculated, obverse and reverse

This is the enhanced uncirculated finish from the San Francisco mint, sold in a specific Mint product rather than standard proof sets. The surface treatment differs from both a regular business strike and a standard proof — expect a combination of finishes that gives the design a layered, textured appearance.

It still uses the same manganese-brass clad alloy at 8.10 grams. No guide price was adopted for this version, so its value depends on the individual coin's authenticated identity, condition and any verified errors.

Keep it in its original holder if possible, because the distinctive finish is the entire point.

2016 Sacagawea Dollar Error List

1. 2016 Sacagawea Dollar — Missing Edge Lettering

A missing edge lettering error means the coin went through production without receiving any of the normal incuse inscriptions — date, mintmark and "E PLURIBUS UNUM" — on its edge. To check, rotate the entire rim under good light and compare with a normal 2016 Sacagawea dollar that has clearly stamped edge text.

If you see a completely plain edge, you may have the error.

Be careful with lookalikes. Pre-2009 Sacagawea dollars have plain edges by design, so a 2000–2008 coin is not an error.

Also, someone can file or polish an edge smooth after the fact. Look for tool marks, uneven surfaces or a slightly smaller rim profile that would indicate post-mint tampering.

No specific price was adopted for this error; value depends on the coin's condition, the completeness of the missing lettering and third-party authentication.

2. 2016 Sacagawea Dollar — Weak / Partial Edge Lettering

Weak or partial edge lettering shows up as unusually faint, shallow or interrupted incuse characters around the rim. Some letters may be fully formed while others are barely visible or missing entirely.

Rotate the full circumference and photograph close-ups of the remaining text so the weak areas are clearly documented.

This can be tricky to distinguish from normal variation. Edge lettering depth can vary slightly across ordinary strikes, and wear or deliberate abrasion can make lettering look weak after the fact.

A genuine weak-strike error will show consistent, undamaged surrounding surfaces — no scratches, polishing lines or flat spots that suggest someone rubbed the edge. No numerical price was adopted; the coin's value will depend on how dramatic the weakness is, overall condition and whether it has been authenticated by a grading service.

3. 2016 Sacagawea Dollar — Off-Center Strike

An off-center strike occurs when the planchet is not seated properly between the dies, shifting the entire design to one side and leaving an unstruck crescent of blank metal on the opposite edge. On a 2016 Sacagawea dollar, look for the displaced Code Talkers reverse or the shifted Sacagawea portrait with a corresponding blank area.

Collectors generally prefer off-center errors that still show the full date, because it confirms the year. Do not confuse this with a clipped planchet (a bite-shaped missing section with a normal remaining design) or post-mint flattening from a vise or similar tool.

A genuine off-center piece will have consistent rim displacement all around the struck area. No price was adopted for this error; value hinges on the percentage off-center, whether the date is visible and the coin's overall condition.
