1787 Fugio Cent Coin Value: How Much Is It Worth?

1787 Fugio Cent Coin Value: How Much Is It Worth?

The 1787 Fugio Cent is America's first federally authorized coinage, and its many varieties create a wide value spread. To give you a concrete anchor: the common United States, 4 Cinquefoils variety in brown copper lists around $350 at G4 and $1,500 at VF20 in PCGS guide estimates.

That is not a blanket range for all Fugios. Legend order, ray shape, small devices, rarity and whether you hold an original or a later New Haven restrike can push values dramatically higher or lower.

Fast Way to Identify Your 1787 Fugio Cent

Snap clear photos of both the front (sun and sundial face) and the back (linked-rings face), plus the edge if possible. Upload them here for a preliminary identification of which variety you may have.

This step helps narrow down legend order, ray style and other features, though it is not a substitute for professional authentication or certified grading.

Which 1787 Fugio Cent Versions Are Worth Money?

  • The Club Rays, Concave Ends variety is a standout, with PCGS guide values around $5,500 at G4 BN and $19,000 at VF20 BN, far above typical pointed-ray Fugios.
  • The Club Rays FUCIO blundered-legend variety lists around $5,000 at G4 BN and $17,500 at VF20 BN, driven by the misspelled legend and club-ray combination.
  • States United legend varieties with the 1 Over 1 date or Cross after Date feature tend to carry higher guide values than their United States counterparts in the same grade.
  • The United States, 1 Over 1 variety carries guide estimates of $900 at G4 BN and $4,250 at VF20 BN, making it one of the pricier pointed-ray branches.
  • New Haven restrikes in silver or brass are later collector productions with their own following; values depend on authenticated identity and condition.

Step 1: Identify Your 1787 Fugio Cent Mint Mark and Version

1787 Fugio Cent mint and version comparison

Every original 1787 Fugio Cent shares the same basic layout: a sun and sundial on one side, thirteen linked rings on the other. No modern mintmarks exist on these coins because they were contract productions, not products of the later federal Philadelphia Mint system.

The first thing to check is the legend order. Some read "UNITED STATES" while others read "STATES UNITED." That single swap changes the variety and can change the value by hundreds of dollars.

Next, look at the sun's rays. Most are pointed, but a scarce group has thick club-shaped rays, and within that group the ray ends may be rounded or concave.

Club Rays varieties tend to be substantially more valuable.

Count the small cinquefoil (five-petal flower) devices that appear on the reverse among the linked rings. Four cinquefoils is the common count, but the number and placement matter for precise attribution.

Also read the legend on the sundial side carefully. If you see "FUCIO" instead of "FUGIO," you have a blundered-legend variety, which is quite rare.

Finally, consider material. Originals are copper.

New Haven restrikes also carry the 1787 date but were produced later as collector pieces in copper, brass or silver. Weight and color can help, but wear and original production tolerances mean weight alone will not prove authenticity.

A third-party grading service is the safest route for confirming what you have.

Step 2: Check Your 1787 Fugio Cent Grade

1787 Fugio Cents numeric grading guide

On the sundial face, check the sun's rays first because they wear quickly. In lower grades the rays merge into a flat disc.

The numerals on the sundial dial and the word FUGIO should remain legible into Good condition; once those vanish you are approaching a Fair or lower coin.

On the linked-rings side, examine the individual ring outlines and the tiny letters inside each ring. Sharply defined rings with full interior legends indicate a higher-grade piece.

Surface quality matters enormously on early copper. Separate honest circulation wear from corrosion, porosity and old cleaning.

A coin with original brown surfaces and moderate wear can be more desirable than a higher-detail coin with harsh cleaning or pitting. Use the comparison image to match your coin's detail level against known grade benchmarks.

BN, RB and RD are color descriptions for copper, not different alloys or separate grades. A coin with traces of original mint red earns the RB or RD tag, but color alone does not raise the numerical grade.

Step 3: Check 1787 Fugio Cent Value by Mint and Version

1787 Fugio Cent — U.S, Cross after Date

1787 U.S, Cross after Date real specimen with date & ornament, center legend closeups, with date and mint-location details, with date and mint-location details

This variety reads "UNITED STATES" and has a small cross (or plus sign) punched after the date 1787. It uses pointed rays on the sundial face.

To identify it, look for the cross immediately following the last digit of the date, and confirm the legend order places "United" before "States."

PCGS guide estimates place this branch at roughly $565 in G4 BN and $2,000 in VF20 BN. That puts it in the middle tier of pointed-ray Fugios, above the common 4 Cinquefoils but below the scarcer overdate varieties.

1787 Fugio Cent — S.U, Cross After Date

1787 Fugio Cent — 1787 S.U, Cross After Date

Here the legend reads "STATES UNITED" instead of "UNITED STATES," and a cross appears after the date. The reversed legend order is the key diagnostic; everything else looks similar to the U.S. Cross after Date variety at first glance.

The swapped legend commands a meaningful premium. PCGS guide values sit around $650 at G4 BN and $4,500 at VF20 BN.

That VF20 figure is more than double the United States version with the same cross feature, so confirming the legend order is worth your time.

1787 Fugio Cent — 4 Cinq, Raised Rims

1787 4 Cinq, Raised Rims real specimen with 1787 date, raised central rims closeups, with date and mint-location details, with date and mint-location details

This variety features the standard four cinquefoil devices among the linked rings, combined with raised rims on one or both faces. The raised rims are the distinguishing detail: look at the coin's edge profile and compare the height of the rim to other Fugio cents you may have seen.

PCGS guide estimates are approximately $400 at G4 BN and $1,850 at VF20 BN. It falls close to the common 4 Cinquefoils variety in value, with the raised rims adding a small premium in higher grades.

1787 Fugio Cent — S.U, 4 Cinq

1787 S.U, 4 Cinq real specimen with date and cinquefoil, states united order closeups, with date and mint-location details, with date and mint-location details

This branch combines the "STATES UNITED" legend order with the standard four cinquefoils on the reverse. No cross after the date, no overdate.

Just the reversed legend and the four small flower devices.

PCGS guide estimates come in around $500 at G4 BN and $1,750 at VF20 BN. It is a step up from the United States 4 Cinquefoils version, confirming that the "States United" legend order consistently carries a premium across Fugio varieties.

1787 Fugio Cent — S.U, 1 Over 1

1787 Fugio Cent — 1787 S.U, 1 Over 1

Look for a secondary "1" visible beneath or slightly offset from the final digit of the date. This is the States United version of the 1 Over 1 overdate.

The legend reads "STATES UNITED" and the doubled date punch is the primary diagnostic.

PCGS guide values are around $600 at G4 BN and $3,000 at VF20 BN. The overdate feature adds clear value over the plain S.U. 4 Cinquefoils version.

You will need good magnification and lighting to confirm the repunched digit, especially on worn examples.

1787 Fugio Cent — U.S, 1 Over 1

1787 U.S, 1 Over 1 real specimen with date & ornament, center legend closeups, with date and mint-location details, with date and mint-location details

This is the "UNITED STATES" counterpart of the 1 Over 1 overdate. Check the final digit of 1787 for traces of an underlying earlier punch.

The legend order reads "United States" rather than "States United."

PCGS guide estimates sit at approximately $900 in G4 BN and $4,250 in VF20 BN. Those figures make it one of the most valuable pointed-ray Fugio varieties.

The combination of the overdate feature with the U.S. legend order appears to be scarcer than the S.U. version, which explains the premium.

1787 U.S, 4 Cinq real specimen with date & ornament, upper cinquefoils, center legend closeups, with date and mint-location details, with date and mint-location details

This is the bread-and-butter Fugio Cent that most collectors encounter first. The legend reads "UNITED STATES," and the reverse shows four cinquefoil devices among the linked rings.

Pointed rays, no cross after the date, no overdate.

Coin Value Lookup is a good starting point if you are trying to figure out which variety you hold. You can look up guides for Fugio cents and many other early American coins.

PCGS guide estimates place this variety at about $350 in G4 BN and $1,500 in VF20 BN. It sits at the lower end of the Fugio value spectrum, making it the most accessible entry point for collectors who want an original piece of America's first federal coinage.

1787 Fugio Cent — 8 Pointed Stars

1787 8 Pointed Stars with obverse stars and date details

Instead of the usual pointed or club-shaped rays, this variety has eight distinct pointed stars radiating from the sun. Count them carefully because the star count and shape are the primary diagnostics that separate this from the standard pointed-ray types.

PCGS guide values are around $500 at G4 BN and $1,250 at VF20 BN. It is a distinctive variety that is easy to spot once you know what to look for, and it trades in the mid-range of Fugio values.

1787 Fugio Cent — United Above

1787 Fugio Cent — 1787 United Above

On this variety, the word "UNITED" appears above the chain of rings on the reverse, rather than in its usual position. This is a layout difference you can spot without magnification once you know where to look.

No supported guide price is available for this branch. Value depends heavily on authenticated identity and the coin's individual condition, so professional evaluation is the best path if you believe you have one.

The unusual legend placement makes it a variety that specialists watch for closely.

1787 Fugio Cent — Club Rays, Rounded Ends

1787 Club Rays, Rounded Ends real specimen with date & ornament, rounded club rays, center legend closeups, with date and mint-location details, with date and mint-location details

Club Rays varieties are immediately recognizable: the sun's rays are thick and bulbous rather than thin and pointed. On this specific version, the ends of those thick rays are rounded, giving them a smooth, blunt appearance.

PCGS guide estimates are approximately $400 at G4 BN and $1,500 at VF20 BN. That may seem modest for a Club Rays coin, but the rounded-ends version is the more available of the two Club Rays sub-types.

The concave-ends version commands a substantial premium over this one.

1787 Fugio Cent — Club Rays, Concave

1787 Fugio Cent — 1787 Club Rays, Concave

This is the scarcer of the two Club Rays sub-types. The thick rays end in concave or slightly scooped tips rather than rounded ones.

You need decent magnification to distinguish concave from rounded ends, so take your time and compare.

PCGS guide estimates reflect the rarity: roughly $5,500 at G4 BN and $19,000 at VF20 BN. Those figures dwarf most other Fugio varieties.

If you think you have concave-ended club rays, get the coin authenticated and graded by a reputable third-party service before making any decisions.

1787 Fugio Cent — Restrike,Copper

1787 Restrike,Copper real specimen with date & ornament, restrike center & rings closeups, with date and mint-location details, with date and mint-location details

New Haven restrikes in copper carry the 1787 date but were struck later as collector pieces, not as part of the original federal contract. They share the same sun-and-sundial and linked-rings design but are a separate category entirely.

No supported guide price is available for this restrike. Value depends on authenticated identity and condition.

Do not treat these as original 1787 coinage or as wrong-metal errors. A third-party grading service can confirm whether your coin is an original or a restrike based on die characteristics.

Values by grade are not available for this coin yet.

1787 Fugio Cent — Restrike,Brass

1787 Fugio Cent — 1787 Restrike,Brass

The brass restrike is another later New Haven production bearing the 1787 date. The yellowish color of brass usually distinguishes it from the brown or red-brown tones of copper originals, though dark toning can obscure the difference.

No supported guide price is available. These are collected on their own merits as later productions, not confused with original Fugio coinage.

Authenticated examples are evaluated individually based on condition and surface quality. If you suspect brass composition, professional authentication is the right move.

Values by grade are not available for this coin yet.

1787 Fugio Cent — Restrike,Silver

1787 Fugio Cent — 1787 Restrike,Silver

A silver restrike of the 1787 Fugio design is a New Haven collector production, not an original federal issue. Silver examples are obvious by weight and color compared to copper originals, though toned silver can look deceptively dark.

No supported guide price is available for this variety. These are uncommon collector items evaluated individually by authenticated identity and condition.

They are not wrong-metal errors of the original contract coinage. If you have a Fugio Cent that appears to be silver, professional authentication should be your first step.

Values by grade are not available for this coin yet.

1787 Fugio Cent — Club Rays FUCIO

1787 Club Rays FUCIO real specimen with date & ornament, fucio lettering, club rays closeups, with date and mint-location details, with date and mint-location details

This is one of the most dramatic Fugio varieties. It combines club-shaped rays with a blundered legend that reads "FUCIO" instead of "FUGIO." Look at the letter that should be a G: on this variety it is clearly a C, creating the misspelling.

PCGS guide estimates are roughly $5,000 at G4 BN and $17,500 at VF20 BN, placing it alongside the Club Rays Concave Ends as one of the most valuable Fugio branches. The combination of the rare club-ray design and the legend error makes it a variety that attracts strong specialist interest.

Closeup photos of the legend are essential for attribution.

1787 Fugio Cent — American Congress

1787 Fugio Cent — 1787 American Congress

This variety carries the legend "AMERICAN CONGRESS" rather than the standard "UNITED STATES" or "STATES UNITED" wording. That legend difference is unmistakable and places it in an entirely separate category from the common Fugio types.

No supported guide price is available. The American Congress variety is evaluated individually based on authenticated identity and condition.

If you believe your coin reads "American Congress," detailed photos of the full legend on both sides are critical for any attribution attempt. Professional authentication is strongly recommended.

1787 Fugio Cent — Cross after Date Raised Rims

1787 Fugio Cent — 1787 Cross after Date Raised Rims

This variety combines a cross punched after the date with raised rims, creating a hybrid of two features found separately on other branches. Check for the cross mark immediately after 1787 and compare the rim height to flat-rim examples.

No supported guide price is available for this specific combination. Rare variants like this need closeup evidence and professional evaluation.

Do not assume values from the more common Cross after Date or Raised Rims varieties apply here, as the combination may place it in a different rarity tier.

1787 Fugio Cent — States United Club Rays Concave

1787 Fugio Cent — 1787 States United Club Rays Concave

This branch pairs the "STATES UNITED" legend order with club-shaped rays that have concave ends. It combines two features that each independently add value, so confirming both is important.

No supported guide price is available. This is a rare variety that requires professional authentication and individual evaluation.

Compare the legend order carefully and examine the ray tips under magnification. Do not apply prices from ordinary pointed-ray States United varieties or from the United States Club Rays branches.

1787 Fugio Cent Error List

1. 1787 Fugio Cent — Double / Multiple Strike

1787 Cent: Error List / Double / Multiple Strike

A double-struck 1787 Fugio Cent shows two separate impressions of the design, usually displaced or rotated from each other. You will see overlapping outlines of the sundial, sun rays or linked rings that do not align.

The effect is bolder than mere die doubling because the entire coin received a second full strike.

This error has been reported on original Fugio coinage, specifically on Pointed Rays, States United, 4 Cinquefoils examples. Do not confuse it with a doubled die, where duplication occurs within a single strike from a defective die, or with post-mint damage where someone pressed the coin against a hard surface.

Genuine double strikes show two coherent design impressions at different positions.

No supported guide price is available. Value depends on the severity of the second strike, the underlying variety and the coin's authenticated condition.

2. 1787 Fugio Cent — Brockage

A brockage occurs when a previously struck coin sticks to a die and its design transfers in mirror image onto the next coin struck. On a Fugio Cent, you would see one normal side and one side with an incuse, reversed impression of either the sundial or the linked-rings design.

This error category has been reported on original Fugio coinage, with examples noted in the Pointed Rays, States United, 4 Cinquefoils variety. The incuse mirror image is the key diagnostic.

Do not confuse it with a die clash, which leaves faint impressions of the opposite die's design but without the full incuse depth and reversal of a true brockage. Post-mint pressing of two coins together can also mimic the look.

No supported guide price is available. Each brockage is evaluated individually based on its clarity, the underlying variety and authenticated condition.

3. 1787 Fugio Cent — Repunched Date

On some 1787 Fugio Cents, the individual date numerals were punched into the die more than once in slightly different positions. The result is visible remnants of an earlier punch beside or beneath the final date digits.

Look under magnification at each numeral in 1787 for traces of doubling, offset outlines or secondary serifs.

This is distinct from the 1 Over 1 overdate varieties already listed, which involve one digit overlapping another. A repunched date shows the same numeral in a shifted position, not a different digit underneath.

Also distinguish it from machine doubling, which produces flat, shelf-like distortion rather than clear secondary punch outlines, and from simple damage or corrosion that eats away at letter edges.

No supported guide price is available. Value depends on the clarity of the repunching, the base variety and authenticated condition.

4. 1787 Fugio Cent — FUCIO Blundered Legend

The most famous Fugio legend error reads "FUCIO" instead of "FUGIO." The letter C replaces the expected G on the sundial face. Under magnification, the C is clearly a different letter, not a G that lost detail from wear.

This blunder appears on the original Club Rays design. Compare the suspect letter directly to a normal G on a standard Fugio: the G has a horizontal crossbar at its center that the C lacks entirely.

Worn coins can sometimes fool you because heavy circulation removes fine details from letters, making a G look open, so good magnification and lighting are essential. Later replicas may also carry the FUCIO spelling but will differ in die characteristics, weight or edge treatment.

No supported guide price is available for this as a standalone error category. The Club Rays FUCIO variety listed among the versions above carries its own guide estimates.
