2018 Quarter Coin Value: How Much Is It Worth?

2018 Quarter Coin Value: How Much Is It Worth?

The 2018 America the Beautiful quarter comes in five reverse designs, three mints and several collector finishes, so there is no single price for the year. Guide estimates from USA Coin Book range from about $0.61 at MS60 for ordinary circulation strikes up to $24.00 at PR65 for silver proofs, depending on the exact version.

Your coin's mint, reverse design, composition and condition determine where it falls in that range.

Fast Way to Identify Your 2018 Quarter

Upload clear photos of both the front and back of your 2018 quarter for a preliminary identification. The obverse photo should show the mintmark location near Washington's portrait, and the reverse photo lets us match the correct design out of the five issued that year.

This is a starting point, not a certified grade or authentication.

Which 2018 Quarter Versions Are Worth Money?

  • S-mint silver proofs across all five designs carry the highest guide estimates in this year, at $24.00 each in PR65 according to USA Coin Book. Check your coin's composition, not just its mintmark.
  • Silver reverse proof versions exist for all five designs. These were issued in a 2018 Reverse Proof Set with polished devices against frosted fields, making them visually distinct from standard proofs.
  • S-mint clad proofs guide at about $5.63 in PR65 — well above face value but below the silver versions. Confirm whether yours is clad or silver before pricing.
  • S-mint regular uncirculated strikes (not proof) guide at about $3.62 in MS65. These are collector issues, not pocket change, but they lack the proof finish.
  • Worn P and D mint circulation strikes trade near face value. Damage, cleaning or a bright surface does not create a rare version.

Step 1: Identify Your 2018 Quarter Mint Mark and Version

2018 Quarter: Mint & Version Guide with all listed versions and genuine identifying details

2018 Washington America the Beautiful Quarters version comparison

Start on the obverse. Look for the small mintmark — P, D or S — near Washington's ponytail.

Then flip the coin and identify which of the five 2018 reverse designs you have: Pictured Rocks, Apostle Islands, Voyageurs, Block Island or Cumberland Island. Each combination of mint and design is a separate version with its own value.

Ordinary circulation quarters are copper-nickel clad over a copper core, weigh about 5.67 grams and measure 24.26 mm across. Silver proofs from 2018 are 90% silver and 10% copper, weighing roughly 6.25 grams.

You can often tell the difference by checking the edge — a clad coin shows a visible copper stripe, while a silver coin does not — but weight on a precise scale is more reliable than color alone.

An S mintmark does not automatically mean proof. San Francisco struck both proof and regular uncirculated versions in 2018.

Look for the mirror-like reflective fields and frosted raised devices that characterize a proof finish. Reverse proofs flip that relationship: polished devices against frosted fields.

Keep in mind that five-ounce silver collector pieces share these same designs but are a completely separate format. Do not compare their values with standard quarter-dollar prices.

Step 2: Check Your 2018 Quarter Grade

2018 Washington America the Beautiful Quarters numeric grading guide

Focus on Washington's cheek and the hair detail above the ear. Those high points wear first on a circulated coin.

On the reverse, check whichever design yours carries for softness on the highest relief areas.

For proofs, tilt the coin under a single light source. Hairlines in the mirror fields and haze over the frosted devices are the main condition issues that lower the grade.

Compare your coin to the reference image for this type.

Don't confuse a weak strike with wear. A coin can be unworn yet show mushy detail because the dies didn't fully impress the design.

Brightness alone doesn't confirm a high grade, either — cleaning can make a worn coin look shiny while actually lowering its collector value.

Step 3: Check 2018 Quarter Value by Mint and Version

2018 Quarter — P — Pictured Rocks — regular strike

2018 Quarter Coin — P — Pictured Rocks — regular strike, obverse and reverse, with date and mint-location details

The 2018-P Pictured Rocks quarter is a copper-nickel clad coin struck for circulation at Philadelphia. Most examples you find in change are well-worn and worth face value.

In original uncirculated condition, USA Coin Book estimates about $0.61 at MS60 and $1.24 at MS65. Confirm the P mintmark on the obverse and the Pictured Rocks reverse before using those figures.

Circulated examples trade at face value. Look for the D mintmark to distinguish it from the P.

San Francisco also struck a non-proof, uncirculated Pictured Rocks quarter in copper-nickel clad. An S mintmark alone does not make it a proof.

This collector issue carries a USA Coin Book estimate of $3.62 at MS65, reflecting lower mintage than the P and D strikes. Confirm the coin has normal luster rather than proof-style mirrored fields.

The 2018-S Pictured Rocks clad proof was struck for collector sets. It has mirrored fields and frosted devices — the classic proof look.

Composition is copper-nickel clad, not silver, so check the edge for a copper stripe or weigh it (about 5.67 g for clad versus 6.25 g for silver). USA Coin Book estimates PR65 at $5.63.

Do not mix this value with the silver proof.

2018 Quarter Error List

1. 2018 Quarter — Pictured Rocks — Die Gouge / Named Raised-Line Variety

A die gouge on the 2018 Pictured Rocks quarter shows as a raised line or extra blob of metal in the design, caused by damage to the die face before or during production. Check the reverse carefully under magnification — the gouge will appear as raised metal that does not correspond to any intended design element.

To confirm, compare your coin's surface to a normal Pictured Rocks reverse. The gouge should be in a consistent position on affected coins, since it originates from the die rather than post-strike damage.

An incuse scratch, random ding or an unrelated die crack can mimic this feature, but those will look different under magnification — gouges are raised, scratches are recessed.

Condition, visibility and the specific location of the gouge all affect collector interest. No adopted numeric price is available, so each example needs individual evaluation.

2. 2018 Quarter — Missing Clad Layer

A missing clad layer error on a 2018 quarter means one of the outer copper-nickel layers was absent from the blank before striking. The result is a coin that may look darker or have an unusual copper-colored surface on the affected side.

The edge will also appear abnormal — you might see only one outer layer sandwiching the core, or none at all on the affected face.

Weigh the coin. A normal quarter is about 5.67 grams; a missing clad layer will weigh noticeably less.

Compare both faces and the edge to a normal coin.

This is not the same as toning, corrosion, chemical exposure or metal that has been scraped off after minting. Those post-mint conditions do not produce a consistent, smooth exposed surface across the entire face.

No adopted price range is available; value depends on how dramatic and well-preserved the example is.

3. 2018 Quarter — Pictured Rocks — Doubled Die Obverse

A doubled die obverse on the 2018 Pictured Rocks quarter would show consistent doubling on obverse design elements — typically lettering, the date or features of Washington's portrait. Look under magnification for separation or notching on letters and device edges that repeats in the same direction and position across affected elements.

Compare your coin to a normal 2018 obverse under matching lighting. True die doubling produces a flat, shelf-like secondary image, distinct from the rounded, shelf-less displacement of machine doubling.

Machine doubling is extremely common on modern coins and has minimal collector value, so the distinction matters.

Reflections and worn die contours can also create the illusion of doubling. No adopted numeric price is available for this variety, so value depends on visibility, condition and confirmation of the specific doubled die.

4. 2018 Quarter — Clipped Planchet

A clipped planchet error on a 2018 quarter occurs when the blank is punched from strip metal that overlaps a previous punch-out or the strip's edge. The result is a missing curved, straight or ragged section along the coin's rim.

The design will be incomplete in that area, and you may notice weakness in the strike directly opposite the clip.

Check the edge texture where the clip begins and ends. A genuine clip often shows a smooth, rounded edge transition called a Blakesley effect — a corresponding area of weakness on the opposite side.

A coin that was simply filed, cut or corroded after minting won't show that diagnostic opposite-side weakness.

No adopted price range is available. Larger clips with a visible date tend to draw more collector interest.

5. 2018 Quarter — Voyageurs — Off-Center Strike

An off-center strike on the 2018 Voyageurs quarter happens when the blank is not properly centered between the dies. The design shifts to one side, leaving an unstruck crescent of blank metal on the opposite edge.

Dramatic examples — say 10% or more off-center — are immediately obvious.

Keep the date visible in your reference photo, because off-center coins that retain a readable date are generally more desirable to collectors than those where the date has shifted off the planchet entirely. This error applies to the Voyageurs reverse specifically.

Don't confuse a clipped edge, a one-sided misalignment or post-mint flattening with a true off-center strike. A genuine off-center coin will have a consistent blank crescent and correspondingly displaced design on both sides.

No adopted price range is available; severity and eye appeal drive value.

6. 2018 Quarter — Struck-Through Error

A struck-through error happens when foreign material — grease, a metal fragment, wire, thread or another debris — gets between the die and the blank during striking. The result is a localized depression, a strange impression or an incomplete portion of the design where the obstruction blocked the strike.

Grease fill-ins tend to produce a smooth, featureless area, while a retained foreign object may leave an odd-shaped impression or even remain embedded in the coin. Either way, the surrounding design should look normally struck.

Do not confuse normal wear, scratches, cleaning marks or a generally weak strike with a struck-through. Those conditions affect the coin more uniformly.

A struck-through is localized and has defined borders. No adopted price is available; the type of obstruction, size of the affected area and overall condition determine collector interest.

7. 2018 Quarter — Partial Collar Strike

A partial collar error on a 2018 quarter produces a distinctive stepped or flared edge on part of the coin. During striking, only a portion of the blank sat inside the collar die, so the confined section looks normal while the unconfined section expanded outward or shows an unfinished edge.

To identify it, rotate the coin and examine the edge profile all the way around. A normal quarter has uniform reeding from the collar.

A partial collar coin will have a section where the reeding stops or the rim flares. Both sides of the coin may show slight design displacement near the transition.

Edge damage, a dented rim or a complete broadstrike (no collar at all) can look similar at first glance but lack that characteristic half-in, half-out transition. No adopted price range is available; severity and visual drama affect value.

8. 2018 Quarter — Apostle Islands — Die Crack / Die Chip

Die cracks on the 2018 Apostle Islands quarter appear as thin raised lines on the coin's surface, and die chips show up as small raised blobs. Both result from fractures in the steel die.

Cracks reported on this design have been noted near the shoreline area of the reverse.

Check the reverse under magnification. A genuine die crack is raised above the field because metal flows into the gap in the broken die.

An incuse scratch — which is recessed — is the opposite and results from post-mint damage. Corrosion or foreign material stuck to the surface can also mimic a die chip.

Distinguish an interior die chip from a rim-connected cud, which is a larger die break. No adopted numeric price exists for these, so each coin's value depends on the crack's size, position and the coin's overall condition.

9. 2018 Quarter — Apostle Islands — Improper Annealing

An improperly annealed 2018 Apostle Islands quarter may show unusual surface discoloration or an atypical texture that resulted from incorrect heat treatment of the blank before striking. The planchet either didn't reach the right temperature or wasn't held there long enough, which can leave the metal harder or softer than normal.

Look at the overall surface color and texture compared to a normal example. Improperly annealed coins sometimes appear darker, streaky or unevenly toned in ways that differ from typical wear or environmental damage.

However, environmental toning, corrosion, chemical exposure or heat applied after minting can look similar. Surface appearance is a screening clue, not definitive proof of the cause.

No adopted price range is available, so value depends on how clearly the error is attributable and the coin's preservation.

10. 2018 Quarter — Pictured Rocks — Lamination / Split Planchet

A lamination error on the 2018-D Pictured Rocks quarter shows as peeling metal, a retained flap or a visible separation within the coin's alloy layers. This happens when impurities or gas pockets in the planchet cause the metal to split apart during or after striking.

Photograph the edge and affected face together to document the split. On a clad quarter, you may see the layers separating at the bonding interface.

The peeling section might still be attached (a retained lamination) or partially missing.

Don't confuse this with scraping, corrosion or a coin that has been deliberately cut or pried apart. Post-mint damage usually leaves tool marks and sharp, unnatural edges rather than the irregular, layered separation of a true lamination.

No adopted price range is available; size and drama of the split, plus overall coin condition, determine collector interest.

11. 2018 Quarter — Voyageurs — Die Crack / Die Chip

Die cracks and die chips on the 2018 Voyageurs quarter appear as raised lines or small raised lumps caused by fractures in the die steel. These are struck into the coin during production and will be consistent across multiple coins made from the same die.

Under magnification, a die crack runs as a thin raised line, sometimes connecting design elements or running from the rim inward. A die chip is more blob-like.

Both are raised above the coin's surface — if the mark is recessed or scratched into the metal, it is post-mint damage, not a die crack.

Foreign material adhered to the surface or corrosion can also mimic these features. An interior chip differs from a rim-connected cud, which involves a larger piece of the die breaking away.

No adopted numeric price is available; prominence and location affect desirability.

12. 2018 Quarter — Voyageurs — Die Break / Cud

A cud on the 2018 Voyageurs quarter is a raised, flat or blobby area connected to the rim where a piece of the die broke away entirely. That missing chunk means the corresponding area of the coin has no design — just a raised mass of metal that filled the void.

Look at the rim for a smooth, featureless bump that disrupts the normal reeding and design. The boundary between the cud and the remaining design is usually sharp.

On the opposite side, the coin may look normal because the other die was still intact.

A rim dent or ding from post-mint damage will be recessed, not raised. An interior die chip that does not connect to the rim is a different category.

Corrosion buildup on the rim can also be confused with a cud but lacks the clean boundary. No adopted price range is available; larger cuds with more displaced design tend to attract more collector interest.
