2018 Dollar Coin Value: How Much Is It Worth?

The 2018 American Innovation Dollar launched a multi-year series celebrating American ingenuity, starting with an introductory design featuring a first patent and George Washington's signature. Guide estimates for explicitly listed grades and versions range from about $10.00 to $39.00, depending on mint, finish and condition.

Most circulated Philadelphia and Denver strikes trade near face value, so the real action is in identifying your coin's specific mint, edge position and finish before assuming it carries a premium.

Fast Way to Identify Your 2018 Dollar

The quickest way to start figuring out what you have is to upload clear photos of the front and back of your coin. Our identifier can offer a preliminary read on which version you are holding.

Make sure you get good lighting on the edge lettering too, since mint mark and position details live there.

Which 2018 Dollar Versions Are Worth Money?

  • S-mint proof with mirrored fields and frosted devices carries a guide estimate around $39.00 at PR65, the highest listed value among priced versions.
  • S-mint reverse proof, with its inverted contrast finish, is a distinct collectible whose value depends on individual condition and authenticated identity.

Step 1: Identify Your 2018 Dollar Mint Mark and Version

2018 American Innovation Dollar version comparison

Start by reading the edge. The date, mint mark (P, D or S) and "E PLURIBUS UNUM" are incused into the edge lettering, not stamped on the face.

Tilt the coin under a light and rotate it slowly to find these details.

The obverse shows the Statue of Liberty in profile. The reverse displays a stylized first patent document with George Washington's signature, marking this as the introductory issue for the series.

The coin is manganese-brass clad, weighing 8.10 grams, with an overall composition of 88.5% copper, 6% zinc, 3.5% manganese and 2% nickel. That gives it a distinctive gold color.

Edge lettering appears in two orientations, Position A and Position B. Both are normal manufacturing variations, not errors.

Once you know the mint mark and the position, you can narrow down which of six versions you hold: P or D business strikes in either position, an S proof, or an S reverse proof.

Step 2: Check Your 2018 Dollar Grade

2018 American Innovation Dollar numeric grading guide

For business strikes from Philadelphia or Denver, check the Statue of Liberty's crown rays and torch flame first. These are the highest-relief areas and show wear soonest.

A coin with full luster, no contact marks and sharp detail on the torch and patent scroll is solidly in Mint State territory.

Circulated pieces will show flattening on Liberty's cheek and the crown points. At AU grades, you will see just a trace of friction on those high points with most luster intact.

Proofs and reverse proofs need their own standard. A regular proof should have fully mirrored fields with frosted raised devices.

A reverse proof flips that contrast, with frosted fields and mirrored devices. Any hairlines, haze or fingerprints will knock down the grade.

Compare your coin against a same-finish reference image rather than judging proof coins alongside business strikes. They are graded on different scales of eye appeal and surface quality.

Step 3: Check 2018 Dollar Value by Mint and Version

2018 Dollar — P — Introductory: First patent and George Washington signature — Position A

2018 Dollar Coin — P — Introductory: First patent and George Washington signature — Position A, obverse and reverse

This is the Philadelphia mint business strike with edge lettering in Position A orientation. The reverse shows the introductory first-patent-and-signature design.

Position A simply refers to the direction the edge lettering reads relative to the obverse; it is a normal manufacturing variation, not a minting error.

A USA Coin Book guide estimate puts this version at about $10.00 in MS65 condition. That means a coin with full original luster and only minor contact marks.

Circulated examples are worth face value.

2018 Dollar — P — Introductory: First patent and George Washington signature — Position B

2018 Dollar Coin — P — Introductory: First patent and George Washington signature — Position B, obverse and reverse

Same Philadelphia mint strike and introductory reverse as Position A, but the edge lettering reads in the opposite orientation, Position B. Again, this is completely normal.

The Mint produced coins in both orientations as a routine part of the striking process.

Guide estimate from USA Coin Book is also around $10.00 at MS65. There is no premium for one position over the other in this series.

Focus on the coin's surface quality rather than which way the edge reads.

2018 Dollar — D — Introductory: First patent and George Washington signature — Position A

2018 Dollar Coin — D — Introductory: First patent and George Washington signature — Position A, obverse and reverse

The Denver mint version in Position A edge orientation. Look for the "D" mint mark incused into the edge.

The reverse design, weight and composition are identical to its Philadelphia counterpart.

At MS65, USA Coin Book estimates about $10.00 for this version. Denver strikes tend to be readily available, so condition is what matters.

A clean, lustrous example with sharp detail on the patent scroll will command the guide price; anything with bag marks or handling drops quickly.

2018 Dollar — D — Introductory: First patent and George Washington signature — Position B

2018 Dollar Coin — D — Introductory: First patent and George Washington signature — Position B, obverse and reverse

Denver mint, Position B edge lettering. Same introductory reverse, same manganese-brass clad composition, same 8.10-gram weight.

The only difference from version-3 is which way the incuse letters face when you hold the obverse upright.

USA Coin Book guide estimate sits at $10.00 in MS65. Do not confuse the edge orientation with an error; both positions are factory-standard.

Check for full strike detail on Liberty's torch and George Washington's signature on the reverse.

2018 Dollar — S — Introductory: First patent and George Washington signature — proof

2018 Dollar Coin — S — Introductory: First patent and George Washington signature — proof, obverse and reverse

The San Francisco proof carries the "S" mint mark on the edge and was struck with specially prepared dies on polished planchets. You will see deeply mirrored fields surrounding frosted raised devices, giving the coin a sharp visual contrast that business strikes simply cannot match.

USA Coin Book lists a guide estimate of $39.00 at PR65 for this version, making it the highest-priced branch among those with adopted figures. That premium reflects the collector-only distribution and limited mintage typical of S-mint proof products.

Any haze, fingerprints or hairlines on those mirror fields will affect the grade and value.

Coin Value Lookup is a good starting point if you want to compare this proof against other dollar coin values across different years and series.

2018 Dollar — S — Introductory: First patent and George Washington signature — reverse proof

2018 Dollar Coin — S — Introductory: First patent and George Washington signature — reverse proof, obverse and reverse

The reverse proof is also from San Francisco and carries an "S" mint mark, but the finish is inverted compared to the standard proof. Here, the fields are frosted while the raised devices are mirrored, creating a striking visual effect that is immediately obvious when you compare the two side by side.

No specific guide price has been adopted for this version. Value depends on the coin's authenticated identity, its condition and whether any errors are present.

If you believe you have a reverse proof, professional grading and authentication from a recognized service will carry significant weight with buyers.

2018 Dollar Error List

1. 2018 Dollar — Weak / Partial Edge Lettering

This error has been reported specifically on the 2018-D Position A American Innovation dollar. The diagnostic is unusually faint or partially missing incuse edge lettering.

Under normal production, the date, mint mark and motto should be sharply pressed into the edge; on affected coins, some or all of these characters appear washed out or interrupted.

Examine the full circumference under good side lighting. Photograph close-ups of whatever lettering remains, as well as the blank sections.

The more dramatic and extensive the weakness, the more collector interest it tends to generate.

Be careful with lookalikes. Ordinary shallow strikes, post-mint wear and deliberate abrasion of the edge can mimic this error.

A genuinely weak strike will show consistent softness across multiple characters rather than isolated damage spots. No specific price range is established for this variety; value depends on the visibility and extent of the weakness, the coin's overall condition and professional authentication of the error.
