2022 Quarter Coin Value: How Much Is It Worth?
The 2022 quarter belongs to the American Women Quarters series, and its value depends on which reverse design you have, which mint struck it, its condition and whether it is a standard clad coin or a silver proof. Guide estimates from USA Coin Book range from about $0.61 at MS60 for common business strikes up to $25.00 at PR65 for silver proofs.
That is not one price for every coin — you need to match yours to the right version first.
Fast Way to Identify Your 2022 Quarter
The quickest way to start is to upload clear photos of both sides of your coin. A front image shows the mintmark and Laura Gardin Fraser's right-facing Washington portrait, while the back confirms which of the five reverse designs you have.
This preliminary identification helps narrow down the version so you can look up the correct guide values.

Which 2022 Quarter Versions Are Worth Money?
- S-mint silver proofs carry the highest guide values at PR65: $25.00 each for the Maya Angelou, Nina Otero-Warren and Wilma Mankiller designs — confirm .999 silver composition by edge color and weight.
- S-mint uncirculated business strikes (not proofs) list around $3.62 at MS65, roughly triple the Philadelphia or Denver guide figure at the same grade.
- Check mint and finish first; damage, wear and a bright cleaned surface do not establish a rare version.
Step 1: Identify Your 2022 Quarter Mint Mark and Version

Start on the obverse. Look near Washington's portrait for a small mintmark: P for Philadelphia, D for Denver or S for San Francisco.
An S mintmark alone does not mean proof — San Francisco also struck uncirculated business-strike collector issues.
Flip the coin over. Five different reverse designs were issued in 2022: Maya Angelou, Dr.
Sally Ride, Nina Otero-Warren, Wilma Mankiller and Anna May Wong. You must identify the exact design, not just the year.
Ordinary quarters are copper-nickel clad over a copper core, weigh about 5.67 grams and measure 24.26 mm across. Silver proofs are .999 silver and weigh roughly 6.343 grams.
Check the edge — a clad coin shows a visible copper stripe, while a silver proof edge is uniformly silver-toned. Weight alone can confirm composition if your scale is accurate.
Proof coins have mirror-like fields and frosted raised devices. That finish is intentional, not a sign of higher grade or an error.
The obverse date is 2022; any secondary date on a reverse design refers to the honored person, not the minting year. Normal lettering placement and the position of LIBERTY are design choices, not mistakes.
Step 2: Check Your 2022 Quarter Grade

Focus on Washington's cheek and the hair strands above the ear — those are the first spots to show wear. On the reverse, check the highest relief points of whichever design you have.
Compare your coin's luster to the reference image. A coin with full original mint luster and no contact marks grades higher than one with the same detail but dull, hazy surfaces.
A weak strike can make an unworn coin look flat in spots; do not confuse a soft strike with actual wear.
For proofs, tilt the coin under a light source and look for hairlines across the mirrored fields. Even light hairlines from improper handling will lower the grade.
Haze or fingerprints on a proof field are also condition problems, not toning.
Step 3: Check 2022 Quarter Value by Mint and Version
2022 Quarter — P — Maya Angelou — regular strike

The 2022-P Maya Angelou quarter is a copper-nickel clad business strike from Philadelphia. It weighs about 5.67 grams and measures 24.26 mm.
Confirm the P mintmark on the obverse and the Maya Angelou reverse design before looking up grade.
Worn examples trade near face value. USA Coin Book estimates about $0.61 at MS60 and $1.24 at MS65.
Original luster and clean surfaces matter for the higher number.

2022 Quarter — S — Maya Angelou — regular strike

San Francisco also produced a non-proof uncirculated Maya Angelou quarter in copper-nickel clad. The S mintmark does not automatically mean proof — check for mirrored fields before assuming.
USA Coin Book lists this version at about $3.62 in MS65, several times the P or D figure at the same grade. These were sold in collector sets, so most examples survive in better condition than their circulation counterparts.

2022 Quarter — S — Maya Angelou — clad proof

This is the San Francisco clad proof Maya Angelou quarter. It is copper-nickel clad over a copper core, the same metal as business strikes, but struck with polished dies for a mirror finish and frosted devices.
Do not confuse it with the silver proof — check the edge for a copper stripe or weigh the coin. USA Coin Book estimates about $5.63 at PR65.
Original mint packaging helps confirm the clad composition.

2022 Quarter — S — Wilma Mankiller — regular strike

The 2022-S Wilma Mankiller uncirculated quarter is a San Francisco business strike — not a proof. The S mintmark can mislead, so check for mirror fields before concluding you have a proof.
USA Coin Book lists about $3.62 at MS65. Collector-set packaging usually keeps these in decent shape, which means many survivors are already near that grade.

2022 Quarter — S — Wilma Mankiller — clad proof

This is the clad proof Wilma Mankiller quarter from San Francisco. Copper-nickel clad, mirror fields, frosted devices.
Look at the edge for the telltale copper stripe that distinguishes it from the silver proof.
USA Coin Book estimates about $5.63 at PR65. Hairlines and haze on the mirrored surface are the most common issues that lower a proof's grade.

2022 Quarter Error List
1. 2022 Quarter — Anna May Wong — Die Crack / Die Chip
The "Weeping Wong" is a die chip error reported on the 2022 Anna May Wong quarter. A small raised blob of metal appears on or near the Anna May Wong portrait, created when a tiny piece of the die broke away and left a void that filled with metal during striking.
Look for a raised, irregular lump — not an incuse scratch or surface grime. Die chips are raised above the coin's surface because the missing die fragment created a recessed pocket in the die face.
Compare your coin to a normal example under the same light.
Corrosion, adhesive residue and other surface contaminants can mimic a die chip but will usually feel different or sit in the field unevenly. Condition, visibility and the specific location of the chip all affect collector interest.
Professional authentication is recommended for any coin you plan to sell as an error.
2. 2022 Quarter — Wilma Mankiller — Die Break / Cud
A retained cud has been reported on the 2022 Wilma Mankiller quarter and is considered one of the more notable circulation errors for this design. A cud forms when a section of the die breaks away at the rim, leaving a raised, featureless lump that connects to the edge of the coin.
To identify it, look along the rim for an area where the normal design abruptly stops and a smooth, raised blob takes over. The boundary between the intact design and the cud should be visible.
A retained cud means the broken die piece stayed loosely in place, so the feature may show partial design under the raised area.
Do not confuse a cud with a rim dent (which is incuse, not raised), corrosion buildup or an interior die chip that does not reach the rim. Value depends on the size and sharpness of the cud, overall coin condition and collector demand.
3. 2022 Quarter — Maya Angelou — Missing Clad Layer
A missing clad layer error has been reported on the 2022 Maya Angelou quarter. This happens when one of the outer copper-nickel layers fails to bond to the copper core before the planchet is struck, exposing the copper underneath on one face.
The affected side will appear distinctly copper-colored rather than the usual silvery tone. Check the edge — a normal clad quarter shows a sandwich of layers, while a missing-layer coin may show an asymmetric or solid copper edge on one side.
Weight should also be noticeably lower than the standard 5.67 grams.
Toning, environmental damage, acid treatment or deliberate plating removal can all make a coin look copper-colored without being a genuine mint error. Certified examples are the safest to buy.
Value depends on condition, which side is affected and how dramatically different the coin looks from normal.
4. 2022 Quarter — Dr. Sally Ride — Clashed Dies
A die clash error nicknamed the "Vomit Comet" has been reported on the 2022 Dr. Sally Ride quarter.
Die clashes occur when the obverse and reverse dies strike each other without a planchet between them, transferring ghost impressions of each design onto the opposite die.
On a clashed Sally Ride quarter, look for faint outlines of the opposite design in the fields — traces of Washington's portrait on the reverse, or elements of the Sally Ride design ghosted onto the obverse. The transferred image should align consistently with the normal die orientation.
Random scratches, raised lines from die polishing or a brockage (where a struck coin acts as a die) are not the same thing. Dramatic examples with clearly visible transferred design details attract more collector interest than faint clashes.
Condition and the strength of the clash impression both affect value.
5. 2022 Quarter — Maya Angelou — Die Gouge / Named Raised-Line Variety
A die gouge variety has been reported on the 2022 Maya Angelou quarter, sometimes called the "Nesting Bird" or "Twig" variety. A die gouge is a raised line or raised lump on the coin caused by damage to the die surface — the gouge in the die creates a corresponding raised feature on every coin struck from that die.
Look for a distinct raised line or small raised shape in a consistent position relative to the Maya Angelou design. Compare against a normal example to see where the extra metal sits.
An incuse scratch (cut into the coin's surface) is post-mint damage, not a die gouge. Die cracks and die chips are different die-failure types with their own characteristic shapes.
Value depends on how visible and distinctive the gouge is, the coin's overall condition and collector recognition of the specific variety.
6. 2022 Quarter — Maya Angelou — Doubled Die Obverse
A doubled die variety has been reported on the 2022 Maya Angelou quarter, described as a doubled earring on the reverse. Despite the "doubled die obverse" label sometimes applied, the reported doubling involves the reverse design detail.
To check, compare the earring area and nearby design elements with a normal coin under matching lighting. Genuine hub doubling shows consistent separation or notching — the doubled image shifts uniformly across the affected area.
Machine doubling (mechanical or strike doubling) is flat and shelf-like, not raised and separated. Reflections under angled light can also mimic doubling.
Worn die contours sometimes blur fine details without true doubling. Condition, the strength of the doubling and whether it has been attributed by a recognized service all affect collector interest.
7. 2022 Quarter — Wilma Mankiller — Die Crack / Die Chip
Die crack and retained die break errors have been reported on the 2022 Wilma Mankiller quarter. Die cracks appear as thin raised lines running across the coin's surface, created when stress fractures develop in the die face.
These raised lines follow the contour of the die damage, not the coin's design. A small die chip may appear as a raised blob where a fragment broke loose.
If the crack reaches the rim and a chunk separates, it becomes a cud — a different category.
Incuse scratches cut into the surface are post-mint damage. Corrosion lines or foreign material sitting on the coin can also resemble a die crack but lack the sharp, raised profile.
Value depends on the length, prominence and location of the crack, plus the coin's overall condition.
8. 2022 Quarter — Dr. Sally Ride — Doubled Die
Doubled die varieties have been reported on the 2022 Dr. Sally Ride quarter.
A doubled die occurs during the die-making process when the hub impression shifts slightly between impressions, creating consistent doubling on every coin struck by that die.
Compare lettering, design borders or other fine details on your coin against a normal example under the same light. Look for uniform separation or notching in the affected area.
The doubling should repeat on every coin from that die pair, so it will appear in a fixed location.
Machine doubling — flat, shelf-like distortion from loose dies during striking — is far more common and much less collectible. Post-mint impressions and reflections from lighting angles can also trick the eye.
Value depends on the strength of the doubling, its location and overall coin condition.
9. 2022 Quarter — Maya Angelou — Off-Center Strike
Off-center strike errors have been reported on the 2022 Maya Angelou quarter. An off-center strike happens when the planchet is not properly seated between the dies, so part of the design is missing and an unstruck crescent of blank metal appears along one edge.
The percentage of off-center shift and whether the date remains visible are the two biggest factors for collector value. A coin struck 5% off-center is mildly interesting; one struck 50% off-center with a readable date is far more desirable.
Do not confuse an off-center strike with a clipped planchet (which has a curved missing section but a fully centered design), a misaligned die (where both sides shift but the planchet is fully struck) or post-mint flattening from damage.
10. 2022 Quarter — Maya Angelou — Die Crack / Die Chip
A die chip error nicknamed "Drooling George" has been reported on the 2022 Maya Angelou quarter. The name comes from a raised blob of metal near Washington's mouth on the obverse, giving the appearance of drool.
Die chips are raised because a small piece of the die face broke away, leaving a void that fills with metal during striking. The chip should appear in a consistent spot on every coin struck from that damaged die.
Incuse scratches, corrosion pits and adhesive residue on the surface are not die chips — they sit in or on the surface rather than rising above it. Check under magnification to confirm the feature is raised and metallic.
Condition, the size and placement of the chip, and how recognizable the nickname variety is all influence collector interest.
11. 2022 Quarter — Dr. Sally Ride — Wrong Planchet / Off-Metal Strike
A wrong planchet error has been reported on the 2022 Dr. Sally Ride quarter.
This occurs when a blank intended for a different denomination or composition accidentally enters the quarter press and gets struck with the quarter dies.
To screen for this, compare your coin's weight, diameter and edge characteristics to a normal clad quarter (5.67 g, 24.26 mm). A wrong planchet will differ measurably in at least one of those dimensions, and the design may be incomplete or distorted if the blank was smaller than intended.
Plating, corrosion, acid treatment and deliberate alteration can all change a coin's appearance enough to fake this error. Certified examples verified by a third-party grading service carry the most confidence.
Value depends on which planchet the coin was struck on, the completeness of the design and overall condition.
12. 2022 Quarter — Maya Angelou — Clashed Dies
A clashed die error has been reported on the 2022 Maya Angelou quarter. Die clashes happen when the two dies strike each other without a planchet in between, imprinting ghost traces of each design onto the opposing die surface.
Those ghost images then appear on subsequent coins.
Look for faint outlines of the obverse design in the reverse fields or vice versa. The transferred elements should align with the expected die orientation.
Heavy clashes that significantly obscure normal design elements are the ones that attract serious collector attention.
Random scratches, polishing lines or marks from a brockage event are not die clashes. A genuine clash transfers recognizable design details in a consistent, repeatable pattern.
Value depends on how dramatic the clash impression is and the overall condition of the coin.
13. 2022 Quarter — Nina Otero-Warren — Die Crack / Die Chip
Die chip errors have been reported on the 2022 Nina Otero-Warren quarter. These appear as small raised lumps or raised lines on the coin's surface where the die face cracked or lost a fragment.
Check both sides of the coin under magnification. A die chip is raised above the surrounding field because the missing die fragment left a pocket that filled with metal during striking.
It will appear in the same spot on other coins struck from the same die.
Incuse scratches and surface corrosion are not die chips. Foreign material stuck to the coin — tape residue, dried liquids — can sit on the surface and look similar, but it is not part of the metal.
Condition and the visibility of the chip affect collector value.
14. 2022 Quarter — Nina Otero-Warren — Clashed Dies
Clashed die errors have been reported on the 2022 Nina Otero-Warren quarter. When the obverse and reverse dies contact each other without a planchet between them, ghost impressions of one design transfer to the other die and appear on subsequently struck coins.
Look in the open fields of both sides for faint outlines that do not belong to the coin's normal design. The transferred images should correspond to recognizable elements of the opposite die and align consistently with the normal striking orientation.
Scratches, die polish lines and random marks are not clashes. A brockage — where a previously struck coin sticks to a die and impresses into the next blank — can also leave transferred design elements but looks different from a classic die clash.
Value depends on the strength and clarity of the transferred image.
15. 2022 Quarter — Nina Otero-Warren — Off-Center Strike
Off-center strike errors have been reported on the 2022 Nina Otero-Warren quarter. When the planchet sits incorrectly between the dies, the strike lands off-center, leaving a blank crescent on one side and a partial design on the rest.
The key identifiers are a visible shift of the entire design toward one edge and an area of unstruck metal opposite it. The date should still be readable for the coin to hold strong collector interest.
A clipped planchet — where material was cut away before striking — produces a curved missing section but the design remains centered. A misaligned die shifts the image but still covers the full planchet.
Post-mint damage that flattens part of the rim is not an off-center strike. Value depends on the percentage of misalignment and overall condition.
16. 2022 Quarter — Nina Otero-Warren — Struck-Through Error
Struck-through errors have been reported on the 2022 Nina Otero-Warren quarter. A struck-through occurs when foreign material — grease, a fiber, a metal fragment or another object — sits between the die and the planchet during striking, leaving a depression or incomplete area in the design.
Grease fill-ins produce a smooth, flat area where design details are missing. A retained foreign object leaves an impression or outline of whatever was trapped.
Look for a localized, well-defined area of missing or distorted detail rather than general weakness.
Ordinary wear, scratches and cleaning can all reduce design sharpness and mimic a struck-through at first glance. The depression should have clean boundaries and show no tool marks.
Value depends on the size and clarity of the struck-through impression and the coin's overall condition.
17. 2022 Quarter — Anna May Wong — Improper Annealing
Improper annealing errors have been reported on the 2022 Anna May Wong quarter. Annealing is the heat-treatment step that softens planchets before striking.
When the temperature or timing is wrong, the resulting coin can show unusual surface discoloration, a streaky or woodgrain-like texture, or uneven toning that differs from a normally struck coin.
Compare your coin's surface and edge to a normal example. An improperly annealed coin may appear darker, lighter or blotchy in a way that does not match ordinary environmental toning.
The surface texture itself can feel different.
Environmental toning, corrosion and heat applied after minting can all mimic annealing errors. Appearance alone is a screening clue, not proof of the cause.
Professional attribution helps confirm the error. Value depends on how dramatic the surface difference is and the coin's overall condition.
18. 2022 Quarter — Anna May Wong — Doubled Die Obverse
A doubled die obverse error has been reported on the 2022 Anna May Wong quarter. Doubled dies originate during die production when the hub impression shifts, creating a consistent doubling of design elements on the die that then transfers to every coin struck from it.
Compare the obverse lettering — LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, the date — and Washington's portrait details against a normal coin under the same lighting. Look for uniform separation or notching in the affected areas.
Machine doubling is the most common lookalike: it leaves flat, shelf-like distortion rather than the raised, separated image of a true doubled die. Reflections from angled light and worn die contours can also trick the eye.
Value depends on the strength of the doubling, its location and the coin's overall condition.
19. 2022 Quarter — Anna May Wong — Struck-Through Error
Struck-through errors have been reported on the 2022 Anna May Wong quarter, including grease and fiber strike-throughs. These occur when foreign material gets between a die and the planchet at the moment of striking, preventing the die from fully impressing the design.
A grease strike-through appears as a smooth, flat area where detail is missing — the grease blocked the die from reaching the planchet. A fiber strike-through may leave a thin, linear impression or depression.
Look for clean-edged areas of missing detail that are localized, not general weakness across the whole coin.
Normal wear, cleaning and scratches can all reduce surface detail and look vaguely similar, but they lack the sharply defined boundaries of a genuine struck-through. Value depends on the type and size of the obstruction impression and the coin's overall condition.
20. 2022 Quarter — Anna May Wong — Die Break / Cud
Die break and retained cud errors have been reported on the 2022 Anna May Wong quarter. A cud forms when a section of the die breaks away at the rim, and the resulting void fills with metal during striking, producing a raised, featureless lump connected to the coin's edge.
Look along the rim for an area where the normal design disappears and a smooth raised blob takes its place. A retained cud means the broken piece stayed loosely attached to the die, so partial design may appear under the raised area.
Die cracks that do not reach the rim are a related but separate category.
A rim dent pushes metal inward (incuse) and is post-mint damage. Corrosion buildup along the rim can also mimic a cud but lacks the clean metallic surface of a genuine die break.
Value depends on the size of the cud, its sharpness and the coin's overall condition.
