2022 Dollar Coin Value: How Much Is It Worth?

2022 Dollar Coin Value: How Much Is It Worth?

The 2022 American Innovation Dollar series covers four state-specific designs — Rhode Island, Vermont, Kentucky, and Tennessee — each struck at Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco. Guide estimates for explicitly listed grades and versions range from about $6.26 in MS65 for business strikes up to $12.00 in PR65 for certain proof issues.

Not every coin falls in that window, though. Identifying your specific mint, reverse design, and finish is the first step to figuring out what you actually have.

Fast Way to Identify Your 2022 Dollar

The fastest way to start is to upload clear photos of both sides of your coin. A front and back image lets us provide a preliminary identification of your design, mint, and finish type.

That narrows down which of the 24 distinct versions you might be holding, so you can look up the right value range for your specific coin.

Which 2022 Dollar Versions Are Worth Money?

  • S-mint Rhode Island Reliance yacht proof carries a guide estimate of $12.00 at PR65 — check for mirrored fields and frosted devices.
  • S-mint Kentucky Bluegrass music proof also guides at $12.00 in PR65 — confirm the instruments on the reverse and the S mintmark on the edge.
  • S-mint Vermont Snowboarding proof guides at $10.00 at PR65 — look for the snowboarder reverse and proof surfaces.
  • S-mint Tennessee Valley Authority proof guides at $10.00 at PR65 — the dam scene reverse and proof finish are key identifiers.
  • Reverse proof versions from San Francisco exist for all four designs — these have frosted fields instead of mirrored fields and require individual assessment for value.

Step 1: Identify Your 2022 Dollar Mint Mark and Version

2022 American Innovation Dollar version comparison

Start with the edge. The date, mintmark (P, D, or S), and motto are incused into the lettered edge of every American Innovation Dollar.

You will also notice two possible orientations for the edge lettering relative to the obverse — Position A and Position B. Both are normal manufacturing orientations, not errors.

The obverse shows the Statue of Liberty on all four designs. Flip the coin over to identify which state reverse you have.

Rhode Island features the Reliance racing yacht. Vermont depicts a snowboarder.

Kentucky shows bluegrass musical instruments. Tennessee displays a Tennessee Valley Authority scene.

All 2022 Innovation Dollars are manganese-brass clad, weighing 8.10 grams, with an overall composition of 88.5% copper, 6% zinc, 3.5% manganese, and 2% nickel. That gives them a distinctive gold color.

If your coin looks silver or copper-brown, it may be plated or damaged — not a different mint issue.

San Francisco coins come in two collector finishes. A standard proof has mirrored fields with frosted raised devices.

A reverse proof flips that contrast — frosted fields, mirrored devices. These are completely different products with separate values, so get the finish right before looking up prices.

Step 2: Check Your 2022 Dollar Grade

2022 American Innovation Dollar numeric grading guide

Focus on the Statue of Liberty's torch, crown rays, and raised arm on the obverse — these are the first spots to lose detail from wear. On the reverse, check whichever state design you have at the highest-relief points: the yacht hull for Rhode Island, the snowboarder's body for Vermont, the instrument details for Kentucky, or the dam structure for Tennessee.

A circulated coin will show flattening on those high points first, progressing to overall smoothness. An AU (About Uncirculated) piece retains most luster but has slight friction on the very tops of the design.

A true Mint State coin shows no wear at all, though it may still have contact marks from handling at the mint.

Proof and reverse proof coins grade on a different scale. Compare your coin with a same-finish reference image, not a business-strike example.

Hairlines, haze, and fingerprints matter more than high-point wear on proof surfaces because they were never meant to circulate.

The comparison image above shows what to look for at different condition levels. Match your coin's finish type to the correct side of that reference — mixing business-strike and proof comparisons will lead you astray.

Step 3: Check 2022 Dollar Value by Mint and Version

2022 Dollar — P — RI: Reliance yacht — Position A

2022 Dollar — P — RI: Reliance yacht — Position A

This is the Philadelphia-mint Rhode Island dollar with Position A edge lettering. The reverse features the Reliance racing yacht, celebrating Rhode Island's role in the America's Cup.

Position A simply refers to one of two normal orientations of the incused edge text relative to the obverse — it is not an error or a scarce variety.

A guide estimate places this at about $6.26 in MS65 grade. In lower grades or with any circulation wear, expect face value territory.

Look for the P mintmark on the edge to confirm the Philadelphia origin.

2022 Dollar — P — RI: Reliance yacht — Position B

Same Philadelphia Rhode Island Reliance yacht dollar as above, but with Position B edge lettering. The difference is just the direction the edge inscription reads when you rotate the coin.

Both positions were intentionally produced.

Guide estimates put this at roughly $6.26 in MS65. There is no premium difference between Position A and Position B for this issue.

Confirm the yacht reverse and the P on the edge.

2022 Dollar — D — RI: Reliance yacht — Position A

The Denver-mint version of the Rhode Island Reliance yacht dollar, Position A edge lettering. Look for a D mintmark incused on the edge.

The reverse design is identical to the Philadelphia version — only the mintmark changes.

Guide estimate is about $6.26 at MS65. As with all business strikes in this series, the edge-lettering orientation is a normal production feature, not something that adds value.

2022 Dollar — S — RI: Reliance yacht — proof

2022 Dollar Coin — S — RI: Reliance yacht — proof, obverse and reverse

This is the San Francisco proof version of the Rhode Island Reliance yacht dollar. It has mirrored fields that act almost like a mirror, with frosted raised devices creating a sharp visual contrast.

The S mintmark appears on the edge.

A guide estimate places this at $12.00 in PR65. Proof coins were sold directly by the U.S. Mint to collectors, so they typically survive in excellent condition.

Handle only by the edges — fingerprints on proof surfaces degrade the grade quickly.

2022 Dollar — S — RI: Reliance yacht — reverse proof

2022 Dollar Coin — S — RI: Reliance yacht — reverse proof, obverse and reverse

The reverse proof Rhode Island Reliance yacht dollar flips the visual effect of the standard proof. Here the fields are frosted and the raised devices are mirrored, creating a striking inverted contrast.

It carries the S mintmark on the edge.

Value for this version depends on its authenticated identity, condition, and any verified anomalies. These reverse proofs were produced as collector products and are less commonly encountered than standard proofs.

Compare only against other reverse proof examples when assessing condition.

2022 Dollar — S — VT: Snowboarding — proof

2022 Dollar Coin — S — VT: Snowboarding — proof, obverse and reverse

San Francisco proof Vermont Snowboarding dollar. Mirrored fields, frosted devices, S mintmark on the edge.

The proof finish makes the snowboarder design pop with sharp contrast.

A guide estimate places this at $10.00 in PR65. These came from the Mint's proof sets, so most examples are well preserved.

Avoid cleaning or polishing — any attempt to make a proof shinier actually damages the original finish and craters the grade.

Value for this piece depends on authenticated identity and condition. Reverse proofs were sold as special Mint products and tend to have lower production numbers than standard proofs.

Compare only against other reverse proof coins when judging surface quality.

Nothing exotic here — just the standard Denver business strike in the other edge orientation.

Guide estimate at MS65 is about $6.26. Circulated examples are worth face value.

If you pulled this from pocket change, it has probably picked up enough contact marks to keep it below gem grades.

San Francisco proof Kentucky Bluegrass music dollar. The mirrored fields and frosted devices give the bluegrass instruments a sharp, sculptural look.

S mintmark on the edge.

The guide estimate is $12.00 at PR65. This is one of the higher-valued standard proof issues in the 2022 Innovation series at that grade level.

Keep it in its original Mint capsule or holder if possible — proof surfaces are unforgiving of mishandling.

2022 Dollar — S — KY: Bluegrass music — reverse proof

2022 Dollar Coin — S — KY: Bluegrass music — reverse proof, obverse and reverse

The reverse proof Kentucky Bluegrass music dollar reverses the standard proof's contrast: frosted fields, mirrored raised devices. S mintmark on the edge.

The effect highlights the instruments differently than the regular proof.

Value depends on authenticated identity and condition. As a special collector product from San Francisco, this version has its own production context separate from the standard proof.

Do not compare it against business strikes or regular proofs when judging surfaces.
