2023 Dollar Coin Value: How Much Is It Worth?

2023 Dollar Coin Value: How Much Is It Worth?

The 2023 American Innovation Dollar series covers four state themes — Ohio, Louisiana, Indiana and Mississippi — across Philadelphia, Denver and San Francisco mints. Guide estimates for explicitly listed grades and versions range from about $6.26 to $12.00, though these are not guaranteed offers.

Before assuming any premium, identify which mint, design and finish you actually have. The proof and reverse proof editions from San Francisco are the branches most worth confirming.

Fast Way to Identify Your 2023 Dollar

Snap a clear photo of your coin's front (Statue of Liberty obverse) and back (the state-specific reverse), then upload both images. Our identifier can provide a preliminary identification of which 2023 Innovation Dollar design and mint you hold.

Edge details like the mintmark and date are also helpful, so a sharp edge photo never hurts.

Which 2023 Dollar Versions Are Worth Money?

  • S-mint Ohio Underground Railroad proof: guide estimate around $12.00 at PR65, the highest listed figure among the explicitly priced versions.
  • S-mint Indiana Automobile Industry proof: also estimated at about $12.00 at PR65, matching the Ohio proof as a top guide figure.
  • S-mint Louisiana Higgins Boat proof: guide estimate around $10.00 at PR65, another collector-finish worth verifying.
  • S-mint Mississippi First Human Lung Transplant proof: guide estimate around $10.00 at PR65.
  • S-mint reverse proofs for all four designs are special collector finishes whose value depends on authenticated identity and condition — confirm the finish before assuming a premium.
  • P and D business strikes in either edge position carry a guide estimate of about $6.26 at MS65; a premium requires exceptional grade or a confirmed error.

Step 1: Identify Your 2023 Dollar Mint Mark and Version

2023 American Innovation Dollar version comparison

Start with the edge. The date, mintmark (P, D or S) and motto appear as incuse lettering around the rim.

Tilt the coin under a light and rotate slowly to read everything. The P mintmark means Philadelphia, D means Denver and S means San Francisco.

Next, flip the coin over and identify the state reverse. Ohio shows an Underground Railroad scene.

Louisiana depicts the Higgins boat. Indiana features the automobile industry.

Mississippi honors the first human lung transplant.

All 2023 Innovation Dollars are manganese-brass clad, weighing 8.10 grams, with 88.5% copper, 6% zinc, 3.5% manganese and 2% nickel overall. They share the same Statue of Liberty obverse.

Business strikes from P and D come in two edge-lettering orientations, Position A and Position B. These are normal manufacturing orientations, not errors.

San Francisco struck proofs (mirrored fields, frosted devices) and reverse proofs (frosted fields, mirrored devices) for each of the four designs. The finish difference is easy to spot once you compare the two side by side.

Step 2: Check Your 2023 Dollar Grade

2023 American Innovation Dollar numeric grading guide

Focus on the highest-relief areas first. On the obverse, check Liberty's torch, crown and the folds of her gown for wear or contact marks.

On the reverse, examine whichever state design you have — fine lines in the Underground Railroad scene or the hull details on the Higgins boat will show wear earliest.

Business strikes should retain full original luster and minimal bag marks to grade in the mid-Mint State range. A coin with obvious dulling, flat spots on Liberty's face or scattered heavy contact marks falls into lower uncirculated or About Uncirculated territory.

Proofs and reverse proofs need their own standard. Compare yours against a same-finish reference, not a business strike.

Hairlines from handling or haze from improper storage will lower the grade on a proof even if the coin was never circulated. The comparison image shows circulated, AU and Mint State side by side — use it for business strikes, but judge proof coins separately.

Step 3: Check 2023 Dollar Value by Mint and Version

2023 Dollar — P — OH: Underground Railroad — Position A

2023 Dollar Coin — P — OH: Underground Railroad — Position A, obverse and reverse

This is the Philadelphia-mint Ohio Underground Railroad dollar with Position A edge lettering. Position A simply refers to one of two normal orientations of the incuse edge inscription relative to the obverse — it is not an error.

The reverse depicts the Ohio Underground Railroad design.

At MS65, a USA Coin Book guide estimate places this version at about $6.26. That is not a guaranteed sale price.

Most examples pulled from circulation or mint rolls will show some contact marks that keep them below gem level.

2023 Dollar — P — OH: Underground Railroad — Position B

Same Philadelphia Ohio Underground Railroad design, but with Position B edge lettering. The only difference from Position A is the direction the edge text reads when the obverse faces you.

Neither orientation is scarcer or more valuable than the other.

Guide estimate at MS65 is about $6.26. If your coin has obvious wear on Liberty's torch or the reverse design, it falls below that grade and trades closer to face value.

2023 Dollar Coin — D — OH: Underground Railroad — Position A, obverse and reverse

Denver-mint Ohio Underground Railroad dollar, Position A edge. The D mintmark sits in the edge lettering.

Confirm it under magnification because P and D can look similar on a worn edge.

Guide estimate at MS65 is about $6.26. Denver and Philadelphia business strikes for this design carry the same listed value, so the key to any premium is condition, not the mint alone.

2023 Dollar Coin — D — OH: Underground Railroad — Position B, obverse and reverse

Denver Ohio Underground Railroad, Position B. Again, edge orientation is a normal manufacturing variable.

Check that the reverse clearly shows the Ohio Underground Railroad scene before assuming your coin matches this listing.

Guide estimate at MS65 is approximately $6.26. A raw coin in truly gem condition may be worth grading professionally, but the margin above face value is modest for business strikes.

2023 Dollar — S — OH: Underground Railroad — proof

2023 Dollar Coin — S — OH: Underground Railroad — proof, obverse and reverse

The San Francisco proof Ohio Underground Railroad dollar has mirrored fields and frosted raised devices, creating the classic cameo-style contrast. This was sold through U.S. Mint collector packaging, not released into general circulation.

At PR65, the USA Coin Book guide estimate is about $12.00. Hairlines from mishandling or haze from improper storage will push the grade lower.

Compare your coin against a same-finish proof reference — do not judge it by business-strike standards.

2023 Dollar — S — OH: Underground Railroad — reverse proof

2023 Dollar — S — OH: Underground Railroad — reverse proof

This is the San Francisco reverse proof Ohio Underground Railroad dollar. The finish is the opposite of a standard proof: fields are frosted while the devices are mirrored.

The visual effect is distinctive and immediately obvious when held next to a regular proof.

No guide price is currently adopted for this version. Value depends on authenticated identity, condition and any confirmed error.

If you believe you hold a reverse proof, professional authentication is the clearest path to establishing what it is worth.

2023 Dollar — P — LA: Higgins boat — Position A

2023 Dollar — P — LA: Higgins boat — Position A

Philadelphia Higgins Boat dollar, Position A edge. Louisiana's reverse shows the flat-bottomed landing craft designed by Andrew Higgins.

Confirm the design before pricing — all four 2023 reverses share the same obverse and weight.

Guide estimate at MS65 is about $6.26. Position A is normal production, not a variety that commands a premium.

Condition matters more than edge orientation here.

Neither position is rarer.

At MS65 the guide estimate is about $6.26. Most collectors who want this design in high grade will look for clean, original surfaces free of heavy bag marks or fingerprints.

Guide estimate at MS65 is about $6.26. The Denver and Philadelphia versions share the same listed value at this grade.

Guide estimate at MS65 is approximately $6.26. A circulated example with wear on the boat's hull or Liberty's torch will trade closer to face value.

This finish should be obvious under good light — the fields act almost like a mirror.

At PR65 the USA Coin Book guide estimate is about $10.00. Handling marks that might be invisible on a business strike can show up glaringly on proof surfaces, so store and handle these with care.

It was distributed through U.S. Mint collector channels.

At PR65 the USA Coin Book guide estimate is about $12.00. That makes it one of the higher-valued versions in the 2023 Innovation series at this grade.

Hairlines or clouding from mishandling reduce the grade quickly on proof surfaces.

2023 Dollar Coin — S — IN: Automobile industry — reverse proof, obverse and reverse

San Francisco reverse proof Indiana Automobile Industry dollar. Frosted fields and mirrored devices set it apart from the standard proof.

The difference is easy to see under direct light — the background looks satin rather than mirror-like.

2023 Dollar Error List

1. 2023 Dollar — Die Crack / Die Chip

Die crack errors on 2023 Innovation Dollars appear as thin raised lines running across the coin's surface, created when the steel die developed a fracture during use. A die chip is a small raised blob, usually near a letter or device, where a piece of the die broke away.

A rim-connected crack that removes part of the design is sometimes called a cud.

Look carefully under magnification. The raised line should follow a consistent path and feel slightly elevated.

Scratches, corrosion trails and foreign material stuck to the surface can mimic cracks but are typically incuse (pressed into the surface) rather than raised. Condition, size and visibility of the crack all affect value, so there is no single price for this category.

Professional attribution helps distinguish a genuine die crack from post-mint damage.

2. 2023 Dollar — Off-Center Strike

An off-center strike happens when the blank is not seated properly in the collar before the dies come together. The result is a displaced design with an unstruck crescent of blank metal along one side.

The more dramatic the shift — while still showing the date — the more collectors tend to pay attention.

Distinguish this from a clipped planchet, which leaves a curved bite out of the edge, or from post-mint flattening caused by machinery damage after striking. A genuine off-center 2023 Innovation Dollar will have a complete design on the struck portion and a smooth, featureless area on the missed portion.

Value depends on the percentage of off-center shift, whether the date is visible, and overall condition. No set price applies across the board.

3. 2023 Dollar — Missing Edge Lettering

Because the 2023 Innovation Dollar carries its date, mintmark and motto on the edge in incuse lettering, a missing-edge-lettering error is significant. Rotate the coin's entire edge under light and compare it to a normal example.

On a genuine error, all required inscriptions are absent — the edge is smooth or only partially lettered.

Do not confuse this with a coin whose edge has been filed, polished or coated after leaving the Mint. Older Sacagawea dollars minted before 2009 have plain edges by design, so mixing up the series is another common mistake.

A confirmed missing-edge-lettering piece requires professional authentication, because the 2023 date normally appears on the edge itself, making attribution trickier without the annual reverse design or an attributed holder. Value depends on completeness of the missing lettering and condition.

4. 2023 Dollar — Wrong Planchet / Off-Metal Strike

A wrong-planchet error means the coin was struck on a blank intended for a different denomination or composition. On a 2023 Innovation Dollar, the normal blank is manganese-brass clad weighing 8.10 grams.

If your coin looks noticeably different in color, feels lighter or heavier, or measures a different diameter, it could be a wrong-planchet strike.

Weigh and measure the coin carefully, then compare against known specifications. Plating loss, corrosion, acid treatment and deliberate alteration can all change a coin's appearance and weight enough to fool a casual observer.

A genuine off-metal strike will typically show an incomplete or distorted design because the blank was the wrong size or thickness. Professional authentication is essential here — no numerical price applies broadly, since value depends on which planchet was used and the coin's condition.

5. 2023 Dollar — Double / Multiple Strike

A double or multiple strike error occurs when the coin receives two or more separate impressions from the dies, usually with the coin shifted or rotated between strikes. The result is two distinct, overlapping versions of the design.

Look for clearly displaced elements — a second full or partial image of Liberty's head offset from the first, for example.

This is different from a doubled die, where the doubling is on the die itself and appears as a slight spread on every coin struck from that die. It is also different from mechanical doubling, a flat shelf-like distortion with no raised secondary image.

Post-mint impressions from vise jaws or other objects can also mimic a second strike. Value depends on how dramatic and clearly separated the strikes are, plus overall condition.

No single price covers all examples.
