2021 Morgan Silver Dollar Coin Value: How Much Is It Worth?

2021 Morgan Silver Dollar Coin Value: How Much Is It Worth?

The 2021 Morgan Silver Dollar is a modern .999-silver collector issue, not a circulated currency coin. Five distinct versions exist across different mints and privy marks, and what you have depends on the specific mint designation, condition and packaging.

For reference, the CPG retail guide lists the 2021-S Morgan dollar in original government packaging at $125. Your coin's value will shift based on which mint or privy mark it carries, its grade and whether any mint-made errors are present.

Which 2021 Morgan Silver Dollar Versions Are Worth Money?

  • Five versions exist: no mintmark (Philadelphia), CC privy, O privy, D (Denver) and S (San Francisco) — each valued separately by collectors.
  • CC and O privy marks are commemorative tributes struck at Philadelphia, not original Carson City or New Orleans coins — know the difference before pricing.
  • High Mint State grades with minimal bag marks command stronger prices across all five versions.
  • Authenticated mint-made errors such as die chips, struck-through impressions or die breaks can add a premium depending on visibility and severity.
  • Original government packaging affects the value of certain versions, particularly the 2021-S.
  • Cleaning, artificial toning or surface damage reduces value regardless of the version.

Step 1: Identify Your 2021 Morgan Silver Dollar Mint Mark and Version

2021 Morgan Dollar Coin mint and version comparison

2021 Morgan Dollar version comparison

The 2021 Morgan Dollar features the classic Morgan Liberty head on the obverse and an eagle within a wreath on the reverse, with a reeded edge. All five versions are struck in modern .999 fine silver containing 0.859 troy ounces of silver, which is different from the original nineteenth-century Morgans made of .900 silver.

To figure out which version you own, flip the coin to the reverse and look below the bow of the wreath. A small "D" means Denver.

A small "S" means San Francisco. No mark at all means Philadelphia.

Here is the critical part: if you see "CC" or "O" below the wreath, those are commemorative privy marks, not evidence that the coin was struck at Carson City or New Orleans. Both of those mints closed long ago.

The CC privy and O privy coins were actually produced at the Philadelphia Mint with a small decorative mark added as a tribute. Do not confuse these with original Carson City or New Orleans Morgan dollars, which carry very different collector premiums based on nineteenth-century rarity.

Step 2: Check Your 2021 Morgan Silver Dollar Grade

2021 Morgan Dollar numeric grading guide

Since these were sold as uncirculated collector coins, you are mostly evaluating Mint State quality rather than wear from pocket change. Focus on Liberty's hair above the ear, her cheek, the cap detail and the eagle's breast feathers on the reverse.

Bag marks and contact marks are the main quality separators. A coin with fewer scattered nicks across Liberty's cheek will grade higher than one covered in handling marks, even though neither was ever spent.

Deep or clustered marks in the focal areas push the grade down noticeably.

Use the comparison image to see how a clean, well-struck example differs from one with moderate contact marks. Look at the high points first, then check the fields around the portrait and eagle for distracting scuffs.

If your coin has been cleaned, polished or shows unnatural surface haze, it would receive a details grade rather than a numeric Mint State grade from a third-party grading service.

Step 3: Check 2021 Morgan Silver Dollar Value by Mint and Version

2021 Morgan Silver Dollar — No mark — uncirculated

2021 Morgan Silver Dollar Coin — No mark — uncirculated, obverse and reverse, with date and mint-location details

The no-mintmark 2021 Morgan Dollar was struck at the Philadelphia Mint. You will find no letter below the wreath bow on the reverse.

It is composed of .999 fine silver with 0.859 troy ounces of actual silver content.

This is a modern collector issue, so virtually all examples start in uncirculated condition. Value depends on the specific Mint State grade, the quality of the strike, the number of contact marks and whether the coin retains its original packaging.

No supported price range is available here, so individual assessment by a grading service or knowledgeable dealer is the best route to an accurate value.

2021 Morgan Silver Dollar — CC privy — uncirculated

2021 Morgan Silver Dollar Coin — CC privy — uncirculated, obverse and reverse, with date and mint-location details

The CC privy version has a small "CC" mark below the wreath bow on the reverse. This mark is a commemorative tribute to the historic Carson City Mint.

The coin was actually struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 2021, not at a reopened Nevada facility.

Do not apply nineteenth-century Carson City Morgan dollar pricing to this coin. It is a modern .999 silver issue weighing 0.859 troy ounces.

The CC privy is popular because of the Carson City mystique, but it is a different animal entirely from an 1880s-CC Morgan. Value depends on authenticated grade and condition.

No supported price range is available, so have the coin assessed individually based on its identity and state of preservation.

2021 Morgan Silver Dollar — O privy — uncirculated

2021 Morgan Silver Dollar Coin — O privy — uncirculated, obverse and reverse, with date and mint-location details

The O privy version carries a small "O" below the wreath bow, paying tribute to the old New Orleans Mint. Like the CC privy, this coin was produced at the Philadelphia Mint with a decorative privy mark added to the die.

New Orleans has not struck coins since 1909.

All examples are .999 fine silver, 0.859 troy ounces. The O privy tends to attract collectors who appreciate the New Orleans connection, though the premium structure is distinct from original nineteenth-century O-mint Morgans.

No supported numerical price range is available for this version. Condition, authenticated grade and whether original packaging is intact all factor into what a specific coin is worth.

2021 Morgan Silver Dollar — D — uncirculated

2021 Morgan Silver Dollar Coin — D — uncirculated, obverse and reverse, with date and mint-location details

The D-mint 2021 Morgan Dollar was struck at the Denver Mint, identifiable by a small "D" below the reverse wreath bow. Unlike the CC and O privy coins, this one actually came from the facility indicated by its mark.

It shares the same .999 silver composition and 0.859 troy ounce silver weight as the other versions. All were issued in uncirculated condition.

Value comes down to the Mint State grade, surface quality and whether the coin is in its original government packaging. No specific price range is supported here.

Have yours evaluated individually if you want an accurate figure. A third-party grading service or experienced dealer familiar with modern commemorative issues is your best bet.

2021 Morgan Silver Dollar — S — uncirculated

2021 Morgan Silver Dollar Coin — S — uncirculated, obverse and reverse, with date and mint-location details

The S-mint 2021 Morgan Dollar was struck at the San Francisco Mint, shown by a small "S" below the reverse wreath bow. Like the Denver version, this coin was genuinely produced at the facility its mintmark indicates.

The CPG retail guide lists the 2021-S Morgan dollar in original government packaging at $125. That figure is a guide estimate for a specific packaging state and is not a guaranteed offer.

Coins removed from packaging, those with surface problems or examples grading at particularly high Mint State levels could land above or below that number. The .999 silver composition provides a base floor tied to the 0.859 troy ounces of silver content.

For the best assessment, consider having the coin professionally graded.

2021 Morgan Silver Dollar Error List

1. 2021 Morgan Silver Dollar — Die Crack / Die Chip

A reported variety for the 2021 Morgan Dollar is a die chip nicknamed the "Alligator Eye" error. Die chips appear as small raised blobs of metal on the coin's surface, created when a tiny piece of the die broke away and left a void that filled with metal during striking.

Look for a raised lump near or on design elements. The blob will be raised, not incised.

An interior die chip sits away from the rim, unlike a cud which connects to it. Do not confuse incuse scratches, corrosion spots or bits of foreign material stuck to the surface with a genuine die chip.

Those are post-mint damage. The value of a die chip error depends on its size, location, visibility and the coin's overall condition.

No specific price range is supported, so individual assessment is recommended.

2. 2021 Morgan Silver Dollar — Struck-Through Error

An obverse struck-through error has been reported on the 2021 Morgan Dollar. This happens when foreign material, such as grease, a thread, a metal fragment or debris, gets between the die and the planchet during striking.

The result is a localized depression or an area of incomplete design where the obstruction blocked the die's impression.

Check Liberty's portrait and the surrounding fields for any unusual depressed area, impression shape or missing detail that does not match normal wear. A grease-filled die creates a smooth, featureless patch, while a retained foreign object can leave a distinct shape pressed into the surface.

Do not mistake ordinary weak strikes, cleaning marks, scratches or general wear for a struck-through error. Value depends on the error's size, clarity and the coin's grade.

No numerical price range is available.

3. 2021 Morgan Silver Dollar — Rotated Dies

A rotated die error has been reported on the 2021 Morgan Dollar. Normally, U.S. coins have "coin alignment," meaning the obverse and reverse are oriented 180 degrees from each other.

If one die was slightly loose or improperly seated, the two faces end up misaligned.

To check, hold the obverse upright and rotate the coin top to bottom along a vertical axis. The reverse should appear upright but flipped.

If the eagle is tilted at an angle, you may have a rotated die error. The greater the rotation, the more collector interest it generates.

Be careful with photos: a rotated image is not a rotated die. You need the physical coin in hand to confirm.

Value varies by the degree of rotation and the coin's condition. No specific price range is supported.

4. 2021 Morgan Silver Dollar — Die Break / Cud

A rim die break error has been reported on the 2021 Morgan Dollar. A cud forms when a section of the die near the rim breaks away entirely.

The missing die piece leaves a raised, flat or irregular blob of metal on the coin that connects directly to the rim and disrupts the normal design in that area.

Look along the entire rim on both sides. A genuine cud will be raised, connect to the rim, and you should see design elements displaced or missing beneath it.

This is different from a rim dent, which is damage caused after the coin left the mint and is typically incuse rather than raised. Interior die chips are also different because they sit away from the rim.

Corrosion bumps lack the sharp boundary a die break produces. Value depends on the size and location of the break along with the coin's overall grade.

No numerical price range is available for this error.
