Which 2023 Sacagawea Dollar Versions Are Worth Money?

  • S-mint proof (PR65) carries a guide estimate around $10.00, the highest listed value for this year's versions.
  • Check the edge lettering orientation (Position A vs. Position B) on P and D coins to identify your exact version before comparing values.

Step 1: Identify Your 2023 Sacagawea Dollar Mint Mark and Version

2023 Sacagawea Dollar version comparison

The 2023 Sacagawea Dollar is a manganese-brass clad coin weighing 8.10 grams, composed of 88.5% copper, 6% zinc, 3.5% manganese and 2% nickel. That golden color is not gold.

Do not let anyone tell you otherwise.

Since 2009, the date and mintmark appear on the edge rather than the obverse. Rotate the coin's edge to find them.

You will also see "E PLURIBUS UNUM" incused along the rim.

The reverse depicts Maria Tallchief and American Indians in ballet. All three mints struck this design: Philadelphia (P), Denver (D) and San Francisco (S, proof only).

Edge lettering comes in two orientations called Position A and Position B. Hold the obverse facing you and read the edge text: if it reads normally from left to right, that is Position A.

If it is upside-down relative to the obverse, that is Position B. Both positions exist for the P and D mints.

Neither is rarer in a meaningful way for this year, but knowing which you have keeps your identification accurate.

The S-mint proof is sold in collector sets and has mirrored fields with frosted devices. A coin purchased in a silver proof set is still this same manganese-brass composition; the silver refers to the dimes and quarters in that set, not the dollar.

Step 2: Check Your 2023 Sacagawea Dollar Grade

2023 Sacagawea Dollar numeric grading guide

Focus on Sacagawea's cheek, the hair detail above her forehead, and the child on her back. These are the highest relief points and the first to show wear.

On a fresh uncirculated coin, full mint luster covers those areas without any dull spots. Once a coin enters circulation, the cheek develops a flat patch quickly, followed by the hair braid.

On the reverse, check the raised elements of the ballet figures for the same softening.

For proof coins, grading is about surface quality rather than wear. Look for hairlines, haze or contact marks on the mirrored fields.

Compare your coin against a same-type reference image showing circulated, About Uncirculated and Mint State examples side by side, and keep proofs in their own category.

Step 3: Check 2023 Sacagawea Dollar Value by Mint and Version

2023 Sacagawea Dollar — P — Maria Tallchief and American Indians in ballet — Position A

2023 Sacagawea Dollar Coin — P — Maria Tallchief and American Indians in ballet — Position A, obverse and reverse

This is the Philadelphia mint business strike with Position A edge lettering. The "P" mintmark appears incused on the edge along with the date.

Position A means the edge text reads normally when the obverse faces you. A guide estimate places this coin at about $6.26 in MS65.

Most examples you encounter will be uncirculated since these dollars rarely enter everyday commerce. Confirm the mintmark and edge orientation before looking up a value.

2023 Sacagawea Dollar — P — Maria Tallchief and American Indians in ballet — Position B

2023 Sacagawea Dollar Coin — P — Maria Tallchief and American Indians in ballet — Position B, obverse and reverse

Same Philadelphia mint coin, same design, but with Position B edge lettering. Flip the coin obverse-up and check the edge: the incused text will appear upside-down relative to the front.

The guide estimate is also about $6.26 in MS65, identical to Position A. The difference is purely a matter of how the coin was fed into the edge-lettering machine, not a deliberate variety.

2023 Sacagawea Dollar — D — Maria Tallchief and American Indians in ballet — Position A

2023 Sacagawea Dollar Coin — D — Maria Tallchief and American Indians in ballet — Position A, obverse and reverse

The Denver mint business strike with Position A edge lettering. Look for the "D" mintmark incused on the edge beside the date.

A guide estimate puts this at roughly $6.26 in MS65. Denver coins are distributed widely through banks, so finding one in original uncirculated condition is straightforward.

Verify both the "D" mintmark and the left-to-right readable edge text to confirm Position A.

2023 Sacagawea Dollar — D — Maria Tallchief and American Indians in ballet — Position B

2023 Sacagawea Dollar Coin — D — Maria Tallchief and American Indians in ballet — Position B, obverse and reverse

Denver mint, Position B. The only difference from the Position A version is the orientation of the incused edge lettering, which reads upside-down when the obverse faces you.

Guide estimate is the same $6.26 in MS65. Neither Denver edge position commands a premium over the other for this year.

Condition and eye appeal matter far more than edge orientation at this level.

2023 Sacagawea Dollar — S — Maria Tallchief and American Indians in ballet — proof

2023 Sacagawea Dollar Coin — S — Maria Tallchief and American Indians in ballet — proof, obverse and reverse

The San Francisco proof is the collector-targeted version of this year's dollar. It features mirrored fields with frosted raised devices, giving it that sharp contrast look straight from the mint.

A guide estimate places this coin at about $10.00 in PR65, the highest listed value among the 2023 Sacagawea Dollar versions. Remember that proof describes the manufacturing method, not a grade above Mint State.

Even a proof can have contact marks or haze that lower its grade. This coin is manganese-brass clad like every other Sacagawea Dollar, regardless of whether it shipped in a silver proof set.

2023 Sacagawea Dollar Error List

1. 2023 Sacagawea Dollar — Missing Edge Lettering

A missing edge lettering error means the incused date, mintmark and motto that should wrap around the coin's rim are entirely absent. Rotate the full edge and compare it with a normal 2023 dollar.

On a genuine example, the edge will be smooth where lettering should be.

Because the date lives on the edge for this series, a coin missing all edge lettering can be harder to attribute to a specific year without identifying the unique annual reverse design or using an attributed holder. Be cautious: pre-2009 Sacagawea Dollars have a plain edge by design.

Also watch for edges that have been filed, sanded or polished to remove lettering after striking. Condition, visibility of the error and whether the coin can be firmly attributed all affect value.

2. 2023 Sacagawea Dollar — Off-Center Strike

An off-center strike happens when the blank is not seated properly between the dies, producing a shifted design and an unstruck crescent along part of the rim. The percentage of displacement and whether the date remains visible are the two biggest factors collectors care about.

Do not confuse this with a clipped planchet, which removes a bite-shaped piece of the blank before striking, or with one-sided die misalignment where the design is complete but shifted relative to the rim. Post-mint damage from a vise or hammer can also flatten one side and mimic an off-center look.

A genuine off-center 2023 Sacagawea Dollar will show a clean, unstruck area that follows the curve of the planchet. Value depends on condition and how dramatic the displacement is.

3. 2023 Sacagawea Dollar — Doubled Die

A doubled die error shows consistent doubling of design elements caused during the die-making process. On a 2023 Sacagawea Dollar, compare lettering, the portrait and reverse figures against a normal coin.

Look for clear separation, shelf-like notching or a shadow effect that repeats in the same direction across multiple design elements.

Machine doubling is the most common lookalike. It tends to produce flat, shelf-like distortion without the distinct raised separation of a true doubled die.

Reflections from the manganese-brass surface and post-mint impressions can also fool you under certain lighting. Consistent directionality across the entire design is the hallmark of a genuine doubled die.

Value depends on how visible and dramatic the doubling is, plus the coin's overall condition.

4. 2023 Sacagawea Dollar — Wrong Planchet / Off-Metal Strike

A wrong planchet error means the 2023 Sacagawea Dollar design was struck on a blank intended for a different denomination or even a different country's coin. The result is a coin that looks right in design but feels wrong in hand: the weight, diameter or edge will not match the standard 8.10-gram, 26.5-mm manganese-brass specification.

Weigh and measure your coin carefully and compare those numbers to the normal specs. A genuine wrong planchet strike will also show design completeness issues if the blank was smaller or softer than expected.

Watch out for plated coins, corrosion, acid-treated surfaces or deliberate alterations that change a coin's appearance or weight. Condition and the specific off-metal combination determine value, and professional attribution is strongly recommended.
