1. 1880 Morgan Silver Dollar — Overdate

An 80/79 overdate on the 1880 Morgan Dollar means the die was originally engraved or hubbed with an 1879 date, then corrected to 1880. Remnants of the earlier digits survive beneath the final numerals.

Under magnification, look for extra curves, serifs or shadowy outlines within or behind the 8 and the 0 — these are the ghosts of the original 7 and 9.

This is a die variety, not post-strike damage. A coin with a scratched, gouged or corroded date area may look like it has extra digits, but damage is random and lacks the precise, consistent positioning of a true overdate.

Ordinary machine doubling can also create shelf-like shadows, but it produces flat, shelf-like outlines rather than the rounded remnants of a different digit.

The overdate is reported for the Philadelphia mint on 1880 Morgan Dollars. Condition, the clarity of the surviving earlier digits and overall grade all affect value.
