1905 Barber Quarter Coin Value: How Much Is It Worth?
The 1905 Barber quarter is a 90% silver coin that still turns up in old collections and estate lots with surprising regularity. Guide estimates for this date range from about $48.00 to $1,608.00 depending on the specific mint, finish and grade.
That spread is not a single price for every coin — where yours lands depends on whether it came from Philadelphia, New Orleans or San Francisco, and how much wear it has endured over the past century-plus.
Fast Way to Identify Your 1905 Barber Quarter
The quickest way to start figuring out what you have is to upload clear photos of both sides of your coin. A sharp image of the front and back lets us provide a preliminary identification of the mint, version and approximate condition.
Snap the photos in even lighting — no flash glare — and make sure the mintmark area on the reverse is in focus.

Which 1905 Barber Quarter Versions Are Worth Money?
- The 1905-O (New Orleans) carries the highest guide value at MS63: $1,608.00 per USA Coin Book estimates.
- The 1905-S (San Francisco) follows at MS63: $1,252.00, making it another branch worth confirming.
- The 1905 proof (PR63) is listed at $799.00 — a collectible finish distinct from ordinary business strikes.
- Always confirm the mintmark and surface condition before assuming you hold a higher-value branch.
Step 1: Identify Your 1905 Barber Quarter Mint Mark and Version

All 1905 Barber quarters share the same basic design: a laureate Liberty head on the obverse and a heraldic eagle on the reverse. They weigh 6.25 grams and are struck in 90% silver with 10% copper.
The critical thing to check first is the mintmark. Flip the coin over and look below the eagle's tail feathers, just above the words "QUARTER DOLLAR." No letter means Philadelphia.
An "O" means New Orleans. An "S" means San Francisco.
Philadelphia also produced proof versions this year. Proofs have mirror-like fields and sharply struck details that look different from a regular business strike.
A shiny coin that has been polished is not a proof — the surfaces on a genuine proof are distinctive from the moment of manufacture.
Once you know the mint and finish, you have four possible branches for 1905: the Philadelphia business strike, the Philadelphia proof, the New Orleans issue and the San Francisco issue. Each carries different guide values, so getting this step right matters before you think about grade.
Step 2: Check Your 1905 Barber Quarter Grade

Start with Liberty's head on the obverse. The hair above the forehead and the cheek are the first places to lose detail as a coin circulates.
Check whether the word LIBERTY on the headband is fully readable — but do not rely on that alone, because a weak strike can make those letters soft even on a coin that barely circulated.
On the reverse, look at the eagle's breast, the tops of the wings and the tail feathers. These high points wear in a predictable sequence.
Compare your coin to the reference image to see where it falls.
Luster matters as much as sharpness. A coin graded G4 (Good) will show a smooth, worn outline of the design with very little interior detail.
An MS60 (Mint State) coin should have no wear at all, though it may have bag marks or contact marks from storage. MS63 adds better eye appeal with fewer distracting marks.
Don't confuse a bright, cleaned surface with mint luster. Cleaning removes the original skin of the metal and typically leaves hairline scratches visible under a light.
Cleaned coins trade for significantly less than coins with original surfaces.
Step 3: Check 1905 Barber Quarter Value by Mint and Version
1905 Barber Quarter

The 1905 Philadelphia business strike has no mintmark on the reverse. In well-worn Good-4 condition, guide estimates from USA Coin Book place it around $48.00.
Jump to Mint State 60 and that figure rises to about $309.00, while an MS63 example is estimated at $536.00. These are guide estimates, not guaranteed sale prices.
Original surfaces matter here. A coin that has been cleaned or damaged will trade below these figures regardless of how little wear it shows.
Look for even, natural toning and undisturbed luster when evaluating condition.

1905 Barber Quarter — PR

The 1905 proof was struck at Philadelphia using specially prepared dies and polished planchets. There is no mintmark.
The fields should be deeply mirrored, and the design details sharper than you would see on a typical business strike.
At PR63, USA Coin Book estimates this version at $799.00. Hairlines from improper handling and surface haze from decades of storage are the main things that affect a proof's grade and desirability.
If your coin simply looks shiny but lacks true mirror surfaces, it is more likely a cleaned business strike than a proof.
Coin Value Lookup is a good starting point if you want to compare this date against other Barber quarter values or look up different denominations in your collection.

1905 Barber Quarter — O

The 1905-O was struck at the New Orleans Mint, and you will find a small "O" on the reverse beneath the eagle's tail. This is the branch with the highest guide values for the year.
In Good-4 condition, USA Coin Book lists it at about $59.00 — only modestly above the Philadelphia issue. The real separation shows up in higher grades: $730.00 at MS60 and $1,608.00 at MS63.
Original, problem-free surfaces are essential at those levels. Any evidence of cleaning or environmental damage will sharply reduce what a collector is willing to pay.
New Orleans Barber quarters in mint condition are tougher to locate than their mintage numbers might suggest, because so many circulated heavily in the South.

1905 Barber Quarter — S

Look for a small "S" on the reverse to confirm the San Francisco issue. The 1905-S carries guide estimates of $48.00 at Good-4, $648.00 at MS60 and $1,252.00 at MS63 according to USA Coin Book.
That big jump between circulated and uncirculated tells you something: most of these saw heavy use, and survivors in mint condition are uncommon. Strike quality can vary on San Francisco Barber quarters, so do not mistake a weakly struck but unworn coin for one that has circulated.
Check the high points for actual friction, not just softness in the design.
