2017 Sacagawea Dollar Coin Value: How Much Is It Worth?

2017 Sacagawea Dollar Coin Value: How Much Is It Worth?

The 2017 Sacagawea Dollar — officially a Native American Dollar — features Sequoyah and the Cherokee syllabary on its reverse. Guide estimates for explicitly listed grades and versions range from about $6.26 to $10.00, though these are not guaranteed offers and do not cover every possible grade.

Most circulated examples trade near face value. Sorting out the mint, finish and edge-lettering position is the real first step before you can judge what yours might be worth.

Which 2017 Sacagawea Dollar Versions Are Worth Money?

  • S-mint proof (PR65 guide estimate around $10.00 per USA Coin Book) — the highest listed guide value among the explicitly graded versions here.
  • S-mint enhanced uncirculated — a special collector finish distinct from the standard proof; value depends on authenticated identity and condition, so individual assessment is needed.

Step 1: Identify Your 2017 Sacagawea Dollar Mint Mark and Version

2017 Sacagawea Dollar version comparison

The 2017 Native American Dollar is struck in manganese-brass clad (88.5% copper, 6% zinc, 3.5% manganese, 2% nickel) and weighs 8.10 grams. The golden color is cosmetic — there is zero gold content.

The obverse carries the familiar Sacagawea portrait. The reverse depicts Sequoyah holding a tablet inscribed with characters from the Cherokee syllabary he created.

Since 2009, the date and mintmark moved to the edge. Roll the coin slowly under good light and look for the incuse lettering.

You will find a P (Philadelphia), D (Denver) or S (San Francisco) mintmark there.

Edge-lettering orientation matters too. If the obverse faces you and the edge text reads normally from left to right, that is Position A.

If the text is inverted relative to the obverse, that is Position B. Both positions exist for P and D strikes.

S-mint coins come in two distinct collector finishes: a standard proof with mirrored fields and frosted devices, and a special enhanced uncirculated finish with a different surface treatment. Do not confuse these two — they are separate products with different packaging and different values.

Also, being packaged alongside silver coins in a set does not make this manganese-brass dollar silver.

Step 2: Check Your 2017 Sacagawea Dollar Grade

2017 Sacagawea Dollar numeric grading guide

On a business-strike 2017 Sacagawea Dollar, check Sacagawea's cheek and the high points of her hair first — these are the first places to lose detail from wear. The child on her back and the raised elements of Sequoyah on the reverse follow close behind.

A coin with full hair strands visible and original luster across the fields is heading toward Mint State territory. Once you see smoothing on the cheekbone or dullness across the flat areas, you are likely looking at About Uncirculated or below.

For the proof and enhanced uncirculated finishes, grading is different. You are comparing the quality of the manufacturing finish — contrast between fields and devices, the presence of hairlines or haze — not just the amount of wear.

A proof with heavy hairlines from mishandling grades lower than a clean one, even if neither was ever spent.

Use the comparison image to see real examples of circulated, AU and Mint State conditions side by side. Keep proofs and special finishes in their own mental category rather than mixing them with circulation strikes.

Step 3: Check 2017 Sacagawea Dollar Value by Mint and Version

2017 Sacagawea Dollar — P — Sequoyah and the Cherokee syllabary — Position A

2017 Sacagawea Dollar Coin — P — Sequoyah and the Cherokee syllabary — Position A, obverse and reverse

This is the Philadelphia mint business strike with Position A edge lettering — meaning the incuse text reads normally when Sacagawea faces you. It is the standard circulation issue.

At MS65, USA Coin Book lists a guide estimate of about $6.26. Most examples you find in change or rolls will grade lower than MS65, putting them closer to face value.

Confirm the P mintmark on the edge and check the text orientation before assigning this version.

2017 Sacagawea Dollar — P — Sequoyah and the Cherokee syllabary — Position B

2017 Sacagawea Dollar Coin — P — Sequoyah and the Cherokee syllabary — Position B, obverse and reverse

Same Philadelphia mint business strike, but with Position B edge lettering. When you hold the obverse facing you, the incuse edge text appears upside down relative to Position A.

The guide estimate at MS65 is also about $6.26 per USA Coin Book. Position B is not an error — both orientations were produced intentionally.

Telling A from B requires careful examination of the edge under good lighting.

2017 Sacagawea Dollar — D — Sequoyah and the Cherokee syllabary — Position A

2017 Sacagawea Dollar Coin — D — Sequoyah and the Cherokee syllabary — Position A, obverse and reverse

The Denver mint business strike with Position A edge lettering. Look for the D mintmark incused on the edge.

At MS65, USA Coin Book estimates around $6.26. Like its Philadelphia counterpart, circulated examples are common and typically worth face value.

The Sequoyah reverse design is identical across all business strikes this year; only the mintmark and edge-lettering position distinguish this version.

Coin Value Lookup is a handy place to look up guides for other Sacagawea and Native American Dollar years if you are working through a collection or a roll.

2017 Sacagawea Dollar — D — Sequoyah and the Cherokee syllabary — Position B

2017 Sacagawea Dollar Coin — D — Sequoyah and the Cherokee syllabary — Position B, obverse and reverse

Denver mint business strike, Position B edge lettering. The D mintmark sits on the edge alongside inverted text when the obverse faces you.

USA Coin Book lists about $6.26 at MS65, the same as Position A. As with all the business strikes, condition matters — an MS65 is well above average for a coin pulled from circulation.

Lower-grade pieces are worth a dollar.

2017 Sacagawea Dollar — S — Sequoyah and the Cherokee syllabary — proof

2017 Sacagawea Dollar Coin — S — Sequoyah and the Cherokee syllabary — proof, obverse and reverse

The San Francisco proof carries an S mintmark on the edge and was produced for collector sets using specially prepared dies. Fields should be deeply mirrored, and devices should show crisp frosted contrast.

At PR65, USA Coin Book estimates around $10.00, making this the highest listed guide value among the graded versions covered here.

One common mistake: being included in a "silver proof set" does not mean this dollar is silver. It is the same manganese-brass clad composition as every other Sacagawea Dollar.

The silver coins in that set are the dimes, quarters and half dollar. Handle proofs by the edge only, because fingerprints on those mirror fields will hurt the grade quickly.

2017 Sacagawea Dollar — S — Sequoyah and the Cherokee syllabary — enhanced uncirculated

2017 Sacagawea Dollar Coin — S — Sequoyah and the Cherokee syllabary — enhanced uncirculated, obverse and reverse

This is the S-mint enhanced uncirculated finish — a special collector product with a distinct surface treatment that differs from both the standard proof and a regular business strike. It was sold through specific United States Mint packaging, and that provenance matters for attribution.

No supported numerical price range is available for this version in the data reviewed. Value depends on the coin's authenticated identity, its condition, and whether any errors are present.

If you believe you have one, preserving the original Mint packaging and getting a professional opinion on the finish will help establish what it is worth. Do not assume it is the same as a regular proof just because both carry the S mintmark.

2017 Sacagawea Dollar Error List

1. 2017 Sacagawea Dollar — Weak / Partial Edge Lettering

A reported variety for the 2017-P Native American Dollar in Position B involves partial edge lettering — sections of the incuse text around the rim are unusually faint, incomplete or missing entirely. To check for this, slowly rotate the coin under strong, angled light and examine the full circumference.

Genuine examples show lettering that trails off or disappears in specific zones, not random shallow spots.

Be careful with lookalikes. Normal edge lettering can appear shallow depending on strike pressure, and coins that have been spent or cleaned may show worn-down text that mimics a genuine partial-lettering variety.

Deliberate abrasion can also remove edge detail. The distinction is that a true partial-lettering coin left the Mint that way due to a manufacturing issue.

No specific price data is available for this variety in the sources reviewed. Condition, the extent of the missing lettering and professional authentication all factor into what a given example might bring.
