2009 Presidential Dollar Coin Value: How Much Is It Worth?
The 2009 Presidential Dollar series covers four presidents — William Henry Harrison, John Tyler, James K. Polk, and Zachary Taylor — across Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco mints.
Guide estimates for explicitly listed grades run from about $4.61 in MS65 to $4.96 in PR65, depending on mint, finish, and design. These are guide estimates, not guaranteed offers.
Sorting out which president, mint, finish, and edge-lettering position you have is the first step before judging any premium.
Fast Way to Identify Your 2009 Presidential Dollar
Snap a clear photo of the front (portrait side) and the back (Statue of Liberty side) of your coin. Upload both images for a preliminary identification of your president, mint, and finish type.
This is not authentication or exact grading — it is a starting point to figure out which of the many 2009 Presidential Dollar branches you are holding.

Which 2009 Presidential Dollar Versions Are Worth Money?
- San Francisco proof versions (Harrison, Tyler, Polk, Taylor) carry a guide estimate of about $4.96 at PR65 — the highest listed grade anchor among 2009 Presidential Dollars.
- Satin-finish specimens from P and D mint sets are a distinct collector finish; value depends on authenticated identity and condition rather than a single guide figure.
- Missing edge lettering errors are a known 2009 Presidential Dollar variety — condition, visibility, and the specific president and mint all affect value.
- Business strikes in MS65 from either P or D mint carry a guide estimate of about $4.61 per coin regardless of president or edge-letter position.
- Position A and Position B are both normal; neither commands a premium by itself, but collectors assembling complete sets need both.
Step 1: Identify Your 2009 Presidential Dollar Mint Mark and Version

Start with the portrait. Each of the four 2009 presidents has a unique obverse, so that tells you the design.
The actual mintmark and minting year are on the edge, not the face — the dates flanking the portrait are presidential service dates, not the year your coin was struck.
Flip the coin over. The reverse shows the Statue of Liberty on every 2009 issue.
Now check the edge lettering: rotate the coin so you can read the incuse text. You will find the date, mintmark (P, D, or S), and motto there.
Position A versus Position B refers to the orientation of the edge lettering relative to the obverse. If the edge text reads normally when the obverse faces you, that is Position A.
If the text is upside-down relative to the obverse, that is Position B. Both orientations are normal production varieties, not errors.
The material is manganese-brass clad for all versions: 88.5% copper, 6% zinc, 3.5% manganese, and 2% nickel, weighing 8.10 grams. Three finish types exist: standard business strikes from P and D, satin-finish specimens from collector mint sets (also P and D), and proofs from the San Francisco mint.
Satin coins have a distinctive soft, even luster that differs from the brighter look of business strikes and the mirrored fields of proofs.
Step 2: Check Your 2009 Presidential Dollar Grade

Focus on the cheek and hair detail of the presidential portrait. On a well-circulated coin, the cheekbone flattens first, followed by the highest waves or curls of hair.
Light rub across those points with full remaining luster elsewhere puts you in the About Uncirculated range.
For Mint State business strikes, look at luster uniformity and contact marks across both the portrait and the Statue of Liberty reverse. Bag marks on the open cheek field are common and pull the grade down quickly.
Satin-finish coins grade differently because their luster was intentionally muted at the mint. Compare your coin with a known satin example — a bright, reflective surface means you probably have a business strike, not satin.
Proofs should show mirrored fields and sharp detail. Hairlines from mishandling are the main grade-reducer on proofs.
Use the comparison image to distinguish light cabinet friction from deeper circulation wear. Do not confuse proof finish with a higher grade than Mint State; proof is a manufacturing method, not a grade level.
Step 3: Check 2009 Presidential Dollar Value by Mint and Version
2009 Presidential Dollar — P — William Henry Harrison — Position A

This is the standard Philadelphia business strike with William Henry Harrison's portrait and Position A edge lettering. The edge text reads normally when the obverse faces you.
Harrison's portrait — the only way to separate this design from the other three 2009 issues — shows him in formal attire. A guide estimate places this coin at about $4.61 in MS65.
That is a guide figure, not a guaranteed sale price. Circulated examples are common at face value.

2009 Presidential Dollar — P — William Henry Harrison — satin Position A

This satin-finish Harrison dollar with Position A edge lettering came from the 2009 collector mint set. The satin surface has a distinctive soft, even sheen — less reflective than a business strike and nothing like a proof's mirrored fields.
Look closely: satin coins lack the cartwheel luster you see spinning under a light on regular strikes. No specific guide price is adopted for this version, so value depends on the coin's authenticated identity, condition, and whether any error is present.
If you believe you have a satin specimen, compare it side by side with a known business strike.

2009 Presidential Dollar — P — William Henry Harrison — Position B

Same Philadelphia business strike of William Henry Harrison, but with Position B edge lettering — the incuse text appears upside-down when the obverse faces you. This is completely normal production.
The guide estimate is about $4.61 at MS65, identical to Position A. Most collectors treat Position A and B as interchangeable unless building a variety-complete set.

2009 Presidential Dollar — P — William Henry Harrison — satin Position B

The satin-finish Harrison dollar from the Philadelphia mint with Position B edge lettering. Like its Position A counterpart, this came in a collector mint set and shows the muted, even luster that defines satin specimens.
No specific guide price is adopted for this branch. Value hinges on authenticated finish, condition, and any confirmed error.
Satin coins in original mint-set packaging are easier to confirm than loose examples.

2009 Presidential Dollar — D — William Henry Harrison — Position A

Denver-mint business strike of William Henry Harrison with Position A edge lettering. The D mintmark is on the edge, not the face — you need to rotate the coin to find it.
A guide estimate puts this at about $4.61 in MS65. Like its Philadelphia sibling, this is a common coin in circulated grades, typically worth face value unless it is in original uncirculated condition.

2009 Presidential Dollar — D — William Henry Harrison — satin Position A

This is the Denver satin-finish Harrison dollar with Position A edge lettering, sourced from the 2009 collector mint set. Satin specimens have a uniform matte-like luster across both fields and devices, distinct from the shiny surfaces of standard Denver business strikes.
No specific guide price is adopted here. Assessment depends on authenticated identity and condition.
Because satin coins were only available in mint sets, loose examples without packaging should be compared carefully against known satin and business-strike specimens.

Denver business strike of William Henry Harrison, Position B edge lettering. The D mintmark sits on the edge alongside the date and motto.
Guide estimate: about $4.61 at MS65. Position B simply means the edge inscription is inverted relative to the obverse, which is a normal production occurrence, not an error.

2009 Presidential Dollar — D — William Henry Harrison — satin Position B

Denver satin-finish Harrison dollar with Position B edge lettering. Same collector-set origin and soft luster as the Position A satin version, just rotated 180 degrees on the edge text.
No supported guide price is adopted for this specific version. Condition, authenticated finish, and any error present will drive its individual value.
Compare surface texture carefully — the difference between satin and a lightly circulated business strike can be subtle on these manganese-brass coins.

2009 Presidential Dollar — S — William Henry Harrison — proof

The San Francisco proof of William Henry Harrison is struck on the same manganese-brass clad planchet but with polished dies and higher striking pressure, producing mirrored fields and sharp detail. The S mintmark appears on the edge.
A guide estimate places this at about $4.96 in PR65. Remember, proof is a manufacturing finish, not a grade above Mint State.
Hairlines from handling are the main thing that lowers a proof's grade.

2009 Presidential Dollar — P — John Tyler — Position A

Philadelphia business strike featuring John Tyler's portrait with Position A edge lettering. Tyler's likeness is distinct from Harrison's, so the obverse design is your quickest identifier.
The guide estimate is about $4.61 at MS65. Circulated examples trade at face value.
Check the edge for the actual 2009 date and P mintmark — the years on the obverse are Tyler's presidential service dates.
Coin Value Lookup is a good place to start when you want to look up guides for other Presidential Dollar years or different coin series entirely.

2009 Presidential Dollar — S — John Tyler — proof

San Francisco proof of John Tyler. Mirrored fields, sharply struck devices, and the S mintmark on the edge set this apart from business and satin issues.
A guide estimate places it at about $4.96 in PR65. Handle proofs by the edge only — fingerprints on mirrored fields leave marks that are nearly impossible to remove without damaging the surface.
Hairlines are the primary grade-reducer.

Satin-finish Polk dollar from the Philadelphia mint with Position A edge lettering, pulled from a 2009 collector mint set. The surface is uniformly soft and non-reflective.
No specific guide price is adopted. Value depends on confirmed satin finish, condition, and any authenticated error.

San Francisco proof of James K. Polk, struck with polished dies for mirrored fields and crisp detail.
The S mintmark is on the edge. A guide estimate places this at about $4.96 in PR65.
Proofs were sold in collector sets, so most survivors are in decent shape. Watch for hairlines and haze — those are the main things that pull a proof grade below PR65.

2009 Presidential Dollar — S — Zachary Taylor — proof

San Francisco proof of Zachary Taylor. Mirrored fields, sharp devices, and the S mintmark on the edge define this collector issue.
A guide estimate places it at about $4.96 in PR65. As with the other three 2009 proof Presidential Dollars, hairlines and surface haze are the primary things that affect the grade.
Handle by the edges.

2009 Presidential Dollar Error List
1. 2009 Presidential Dollar — Missing Edge Lettering
The missing edge lettering error on 2009 Presidential Dollars means all of the normally incuse text — date, mintmark, and motto — is completely absent from the edge. To check, rotate the coin slowly under good light and compare it side by side with a normal 2009 Presidential Dollar that shows clear edge inscriptions.
Every letter and digit should be there on a normal coin; on this error, the edge is smooth or blank where text belongs.
Be careful with lookalikes. Edges that have been filed, polished, or heavily worn can mimic the missing-lettering look.
Pre-2009 Sacagawea dollars have a plain edge by design and are not errors. If you suspect you have a genuine missing edge lettering coin, the specific president, mint, condition, and how completely the lettering is absent all affect what it might be worth — but no specific guide price is adopted for this error.
Third-party authentication is the most reliable way to confirm the variety.
