2011 Presidential Dollar Coin Value: How Much Is It Worth?

2011 Presidential Dollar Coin Value: How Much Is It Worth?

The 2011 Presidential Dollar series covers four presidents — Andrew Johnson, Ulysses S. Grant, Rutherford B.

Hayes, and James Garfield — each struck at Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco. Guide estimates for explicitly listed grades range from about $10.00 to $14.00, depending on mint, finish, and condition.

Most circulated examples trade near face value, so identifying the specific branch matters before assuming anything about rarity.

Fast Way to Identify Your 2011 Presidential Dollar

Upload clear photos of both sides of your coin, plus the edge if possible. The edge lettering carries the actual year and mintmark, which are essential for a preliminary identification.

Our identifier can help sort out which president, mint, and position variant you have — a good first step before digging deeper into value.

Which 2011 Presidential Dollar Versions Are Worth Money?

  • S-mint proof versions (Andrew Johnson, Grant, Hayes, Garfield) are collector strikes worth checking — guide estimates sit around $10.00 at PR65.
  • Business strikes from P or D in high Mint State grades (MS65) carry guide estimates near $14.00 per coin.
  • Weak or partial edge lettering is a reported error variety for this year — examine your coin's edge carefully.
  • Do not pay a premium for ordinary wear, cleaning, artificial plating, glare, or unverified error claims.

Step 1: Identify Your 2011 Presidential Dollar Mint Mark and Version

2011 Presidential Dollars Coin mint and version comparison

2011 Presidential Dollars version comparison

Start with the portrait. Each of the four 2011 presidents has a distinct design on the obverse, and the name is inscribed on the coin.

The reverse on all of them shows the Statue of Liberty.

The critical detail is the edge. That is where you will find the actual minting year (2011), the mintmark (P, D, or S), and the motto.

The dates shown on the obverse next to the president are his years in office, not the year the coin was struck — a common point of confusion.

Edge lettering also comes in two orientations, called Position A and Position B. Both are completely normal production variants, not errors.

If the lettering reads normally when the obverse faces you, that is one position; if it reads normally with the reverse facing you, that is the other.

The material is manganese-brass clad, weighing 8.10 grams, with an overall composition of 88.5% copper, 6% zinc, 3.5% manganese, and 2% nickel. San Francisco coins are proof strikes made for collectors, distinct from the business strikes produced in Philadelphia and Denver.

Step 2: Check Your 2011 Presidential Dollar Grade

2011 Presidential Dollars numeric grading guide

Focus on the president's cheek, hair detail, and any high-relief areas on the portrait. These wear first on circulated coins.

On the reverse, check the Statue of Liberty's torch and crown for smoothing.

A coin with full original luster and no visible wear sits in Mint State territory. Once you see even slight friction on the cheek or hair, you are looking at About Uncirculated or below.

Proof coins from San Francisco have a different look entirely — mirror-like fields with sharply frosted devices. Grade those separately.

Hairlines from mishandling, not circulation wear, are what drag a proof's grade down.

Use the comparison image to match your coin against examples at different condition levels. Keep business strikes and proofs in separate mental categories, because the grading criteria differ.

Step 3: Check 2011 Presidential Dollar Value by Mint and Version

2011 Presidential Dollar — P — Andrew Johnson — Position A

2011 Presidential Dollar Coin — P — Andrew Johnson — Position A, obverse and reverse, with date and mint-location details

This is the Philadelphia-mint Andrew Johnson dollar with Position A edge lettering. The portrait shows the 17th president, with his service dates on the obverse — do not confuse those with the issue year on the edge.

Position A simply describes the orientation of the incuse edge text relative to the obverse. Guide estimates place this coin at about $14.00 in MS65, per USA Coin Book.

Circulated examples are generally worth face value.

2011 Presidential Dollar — P — Andrew Johnson — Position B

2011 Presidential Dollar Coin — P — Andrew Johnson — Position B, obverse and reverse, with date and mint-location details

Same Philadelphia Andrew Johnson dollar, but with Position B edge lettering. The only difference from Position A is which way the edge text reads when you orient the coin.

Both positions were produced normally and neither is scarcer in any documented way. At MS65, guide estimates are around $14.00.

If you cannot read the edge clearly, try tilting the coin under a strong light.

Worth keeping in uncirculated condition, but a worn example from pocket change is a dollar coin.

The San Francisco proof Andrew Johnson dollar. This was struck for collectors using polished dies and planchets, giving it mirror-like fields.

You will find the "S" mintmark on the edge. These were sold in proof sets, so most survivors are well-preserved.

At PR65, the USA Coin Book guide estimate is about $10.00. Grade proofs by hairlines and handling marks rather than circulation wear.

2011 Presidential Dollar Error List

1. 2011 Presidential Dollar — Weak / Partial Edge Lettering

Weak or partial edge lettering has been reported on 2011 Presidential Dollars. On a normal coin, the incuse edge text — including the date, mintmark, and motto — should be clearly readable around the full circumference.

On this error, some or all of that lettering is unusually faint, shallow, or partially missing.

To check, roll the coin slowly on its edge under good light and look for sections where letters trail off or are barely impressed. Photograph any weak areas closely.

Be careful with lookalikes. Ordinary shallow strikes, general circulation wear, and deliberate abrasion or sanding can all mimic a genuine weak-edge error.

A coin that has been carried in a pocket for years will naturally lose edge sharpness. The specific condition, how much lettering is affected, and whether the error can be confirmed all influence value, so no single price applies across the board.
