2020 Dollar Coin Value: How Much Is It Worth?
The 2020 American Innovation Dollar series covers four state designs — Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maryland and South Carolina — across three mints. Guide estimates for explicitly listed grades and versions range from about $7.29 in MS65 to $19.00 in PR65, depending on mint, design and finish.
These are guide estimates, not guaranteed offers. Before assigning any value, you need to pin down the mint, reverse design and whether your coin is a business strike, proof or reverse proof.
Fast Way to Identify Your 2020 Dollar
The quickest way to start sorting out your 2020 Innovation Dollar is to upload clear photos of the front and back. Our identifier can give you a preliminary identification of the design, mint and finish from those images.
That initial step helps narrow down which of the twenty-four possible versions you might be holding.

Which 2020 Dollar Versions Are Worth Money?
- S-mint proof coins (CT, MA, MD, SC designs) carry guide estimates around $15.00 at PR65, well above the $7.29 MS65 level for business strikes.
- The S-mint Maryland Hubble Space Telescope proof lists at $19.00 in PR65, the highest adopted guide figure among the listed versions.
- S-mint reverse proofs for all four designs have no adopted guide price, so value depends on individual assessment of authenticated identity and condition.
- Proof and reverse proof finishes are collector-only issues from the San Francisco Mint — they did not enter general circulation.
Step 1: Identify Your 2020 Dollar Mint Mark and Version

Start with the edge. The date, mintmark (P, D or S) and "E PLURIBUS UNUM" are incuse on the lettered edge, not on the faces.
Rotate the coin slowly under good light to read them.
Next, flip to the reverse and identify the state design. Connecticut shows a Gerber variable scale.
Massachusetts features a telephone. Maryland depicts the Hubble Space Telescope.
South Carolina honors Septima Clark.
All 2020 Innovation Dollars are manganese-brass clad, weighing 8.10 grams and carrying a gold-toned color. The obverse is the same Statue of Liberty portrait across every issue.
Edge lettering appears in one of two orientations — Position A or Position B — depending on which way the text reads relative to the obverse. Both positions are normal manufacturing variations, not errors.
Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.
S-mint coins come in proof or reverse proof finishes. A standard proof has mirror-like fields with frosted raised devices.
A reverse proof flips that relationship — frosted fields with mirrored devices. Telling these apart matters because they are priced separately.
Step 2: Check Your 2020 Dollar Grade

For business strikes (P and D mints), check the Statue of Liberty's torch, crown rays and the folds of her gown first. These high-relief areas lose detail quickest.
On the reverse, focus on the central design element — the scale, telephone, telescope or figure — for early signs of wear.
Compare your coin against a same-finish reference image. A coin with full original luster and no contact marks visible at arm's length is in the Mint State range.
Light friction on Liberty's cheek or the highest reverse point drops it to About Uncirculated.
Circulated examples show progressive flattening from AU down through VF and below. Honest wear is one thing; cleaning, polishing or environmental damage is another, and those problems reduce value regardless of remaining detail.
Proof and reverse proof coins need their own comparison standard. Judge them by the sharpness of the mirror-to-frost contrast and the absence of hairlines or haze, not by the same wear map you'd use on a business strike.
Step 3: Check 2020 Dollar Value by Mint and Version
2020 Dollar — P — CT: Gerber variable scale — Position A

This is the Philadelphia mint business strike with the Connecticut Gerber variable scale reverse, oriented in edge-lettering Position A. The reverse shows the precision measuring instrument that revolutionized quality control.
At MS65, a USA Coin Book guide estimate puts it at about $7.29. Position A simply refers to which direction the incuse edge text reads when the obverse faces you — it is a normal production variation, not an error or premium variety.
Confirm the reverse design before attributing.

2020 Dollar — P — CT: Gerber variable scale — Position B

Same Philadelphia mint Connecticut design as Version 1, but with edge lettering in Position B. The value at MS65 is the same $7.29 guide estimate.
To tell Positions A and B apart, hold the obverse facing you and read the edge inscription — the direction of the text differs. Neither position is scarcer or more valuable than the other.
Identify the Gerber variable scale reverse first, then note the edge orientation as a catalog detail.

Denver mint, Connecticut Gerber variable scale reverse, Position A edge lettering. The D mintmark appears incuse on the edge alongside the date.
Guide estimate at MS65 is $7.29. Denver business strikes entered circulation through banks and the Mint's direct-sale rolls.
Position A is a standard orientation. As with the Philadelphia version, confirm the state reverse design before assuming which version you have.

The MS65 guide estimate remains $7.29. Don't pay extra for one position over the other — the market treats them the same for this series.
Check the edge for the D mintmark to separate this from the Philadelphia issue.

2020 Dollar — S — CT: Gerber variable scale — proof

San Francisco proof with the Connecticut Gerber variable scale reverse. This coin was struck on specially prepared planchets with polished dies, producing mirror fields and frosted raised devices.
The PR65 guide estimate is $15.00 per USA Coin Book. That is roughly double the business-strike guide value at its listed grade, reflecting the collector-only distribution.
Look for an S mintmark on the edge. Handle proofs by the edges only — fingerprints on mirror fields are permanent.

San Francisco reverse proof with the Connecticut Gerber variable scale design. Unlike the standard proof, this version has frosted fields and mirrored raised devices — the visual contrast is flipped.
No adopted guide price is available for this version, so its value depends on individual assessment considering authenticated identity, condition and whether any errors are present. These were sold through Mint packaging, not released into circulation.
Compare only against another reverse proof when judging surface quality.

2020 Dollar — P — MA: Telephone — Position A

Philadelphia mint business strike featuring the Massachusetts Telephone reverse, Position A edge lettering. The reverse depicts the telephone honoring Alexander Graham Bell's innovation.
At MS65, the guide estimate is $7.29. Position A is one of two normal edge-lettering orientations — not an error.
First verify you are looking at the telephone design and not one of the other three 2020 reverses before cataloging.
Coin Value Lookup is a good place to look up guides for other years and denominations in this series if you are working through a set.

Denver mint Massachusetts Telephone reverse, Position A. The D mintmark on the edge distinguishes it from the Philadelphia version.
Guide estimate at MS65 is $7.29. Denver and Philadelphia business strikes for this design are valued identically in the guide.
Condition drives the price difference, not the mint. Keep the coin away from PVC holders and harsh cleaning — those reduce grade faster than honest circulation wear.

2020 Dollar — D — MD: Hubble Space Telescope — Position B

Denver Maryland Hubble Space Telescope, Position B. Guide estimate at MS65 is $7.29.
As with all the business-strike versions in this year, neither mint nor edge-lettering position creates a premium in current guide data. What matters more is the actual condition of the specific coin in your hand.

2020 Dollar — S — MD: Hubble Space Telescope — proof

San Francisco proof with the Maryland Hubble Space Telescope reverse. This version carries the highest adopted guide figure among all listed 2020 Innovation Dollar versions: $19.00 at PR65 per USA Coin Book.
The mirrored fields show off the telescope's detail particularly well. Look for the S mintmark on the edge and confirm the proof finish — frosted devices over mirror fields.
Do not confuse this with the reverse proof, which has the opposite surface treatment and a different value profile.

2020 Dollar — S — MD: Hubble Space Telescope — reverse proof

San Francisco reverse proof with the Maryland Hubble Space Telescope design. Frosted fields and mirrored devices set it apart from the standard proof.
No adopted guide price is available for this version, so value is determined by individual assessment based on authenticated identity, condition and the presence of any confirmed errors. If you think you have one, compare the surface treatment carefully against a known standard proof — the difference is unmistakable once you see both side by side.

Philadelphia South Carolina Septima Clark in Position B. Same $7.29 guide estimate at MS65.
The figure on the reverse is distinctive — you should not confuse it with the other three state designs. Edge-lettering direction is the only difference from Position A, and it does not affect value in current guide data.

2020 Dollar — D — SC: Septima Clark — Position A

Denver mint South Carolina Septima Clark, Position A. D mintmark on the edge.
The MS65 guide estimate is $7.29. Denver and Philadelphia business strikes share the same guide value for this design.
Look for the D mintmark to attribute correctly — without checking the edge, you cannot tell the two mints apart on this series.

2020 Dollar — D — SC: Septima Clark — Position B

Denver South Carolina Septima Clark, Position B. Guide estimate at MS65 is $7.29.
This completes the set of four business-strike versions for the South Carolina design. Neither mint nor edge position creates a guide-supported premium.
Condition remains the key variable for these circulating issues.

2020 Dollar — S — SC: Septima Clark — proof

San Francisco proof with the South Carolina Septima Clark reverse. Mirror fields and frosted devices, S mintmark on the edge.
The PR65 guide estimate is $15.00. Like the other S-mint proofs in this year, it was sold to collectors through Mint packaging.
The Septima Clark figure's raised details should show sharp frost against the reflective field on a well-preserved example.

2020 Dollar — S — SC: Septima Clark — reverse proof

San Francisco reverse proof featuring the South Carolina Septima Clark design. Frosted fields with mirrored raised devices create the inverted contrast.
No adopted guide price is available, so this coin's value depends on individual assessment of its authenticated identity, condition and any verified errors. These were Mint-issued collector pieces.
Compare surface treatment against a standard proof to confirm which finish you have.

2020 Dollar Error List
1. 2020 Dollar — Missing Edge Lettering
On a normal 2020 Innovation Dollar, the edge carries incuse lettering including the date, mintmark and "E PLURIBUS UNUM." A missing-edge-lettering error means all of that text is absent — the edge is smooth or plain. Rotate the coin slowly under magnification and compare it with a normal same-year example.
Be careful with lookalikes. A coin whose edge has been filed or polished can mimic a smooth edge, and pre-2009 Sacagawea dollars had plain edges by design.
The gold color can cause confusion between the two series if you are not checking the reverse design.
Because the date is normally on the edge, attributing a plain-edge coin to 2020 specifically may require identifying the annual reverse design or having the coin in an attributed holder. Condition, visibility and the specific nature of the error affect value, so no single price applies to every example.
2. 2020 Dollar — Double / Multiple Strike
A double-struck or multiple-strike error occurs when the coin receives more than one impression from the dies. Look for a second, displaced or rotated copy of the design overlapping the first.
The two impressions will show a clear spatial relationship — shifted, tilted or both.
Do not confuse this with a doubled die, which is a different category caused by a misaligned hub impression on the die itself. Doubled dies show uniform doubling on every coin struck by that die, while a double strike is unique to the individual coin.
Also rule out post-mint damage such as vise marks or re-stamping outside the Mint.
Value depends on how dramatic and visible the displacement is, plus the coin's overall condition. No single guide price covers all double-strike errors on this series.
3. 2020 Dollar — Die Crack / Die Chip
Die cracks appear as raised lines running across the coin's surface, caused by fractures in the steel die transferring metal into the crack during striking. A die chip is a small raised blob where a piece of the die broke away.
Both are raised above the field — if the mark is incuse (sunk into the surface), it is a scratch or gouge, not a die crack.
A crack that extends from an interior point to the rim can form a "cud," which is a larger raised area of unstruck metal at the edge. Corrosion deposits or foreign material stuck to the surface can also mimic small die chips, so check whether the feature is actually part of the metal.
Value varies with length, location and visual impact. No adopted price range applies across the board for die cracks on 2020 Innovation Dollars.
4. 2020 Dollar — Off-Center Strike
An off-center strike happens when the planchet is not properly seated between the dies, so the design is shifted to one side and a blank crescent of unstruck metal appears opposite. The percentage off-center and whether the date remains visible are the two biggest factors in collectibility.
Do not confuse this with a clipped planchet, which removes a curved section of the blank before striking but still shows a centered design. A one-sided misalignment — where only the obverse or reverse is shifted — is a different error category.
Post-mint flattening from machinery can also make a coin look off-center, but the blank crescent will be absent.
No adopted guide price is available for off-center strikes on this series. Each coin's value depends on the degree of displacement, condition and whether key design elements like the date are still readable.
