2012 Presidential Dollar Coin Value: How Much Is It Worth?
The 2012 Presidential Dollar series honors four presidents: Chester Arthur, Benjamin Harrison, and Grover Cleveland twice — for his non-consecutive first and second terms. Most business-strike examples from Philadelphia or Denver are worth close to face value in circulated condition.
Guide estimates for collectible grades range from about $6.25 in MS65 to $21.00 for San Francisco proof issues at PR65, depending on the specific president, mint and finish. Sorting out which version you have is the first real step.
Fast Way to Identify Your 2012 Presidential Dollar
Upload clear photos of both the front and back of your 2012 Presidential Dollar for a preliminary identification. Our tool can help you figure out which president is depicted and narrow down the mint and version.
For the mintmark and date, you will also need to check the edge — that information is incuse-stamped around the rim, not on the faces.

Which 2012 Presidential Dollar Versions Are Worth Money?
- S-mint Chester Arthur proof — guide estimate around $21.00 at PR65, only available in collector proof sets.
- S-mint Grover Cleveland first-term proof — guide estimate around $21.00 at PR65, distinguished by the 1885–1889 service dates.
- S-mint Benjamin Harrison proof — guide estimate around $21.00 at PR65, struck at San Francisco for collectors.
- S-mint Grover Cleveland second-term proof — guide estimate around $21.00 at PR65, bearing the 1893–1897 service dates.
Step 1: Identify Your 2012 Presidential Dollar Mint Mark and Version

Start with the portrait. Each of the four 2012 designs shows a different president, and the name is inscribed on the obverse beneath the portrait.
The dates flanking each president are their years of service, not the year the coin was struck. The actual 2012 minting date, the mintmark (P, D or S) and the motto are all on the edge in incuse lettering.
Grover Cleveland appears on two separate coins this year — one for his first term and one for his second. The portraits differ slightly, and the service dates are different: 1885–1889 for the first term and 1893–1897 for the second.
If your Cleveland dollar shows the earlier service dates, it is the first-term issue.
All 2012 Presidential Dollars are manganese-brass clad, weighing 8.10 grams. The reverse on every version features the Statue of Liberty.
Edge lettering comes in two orientations, called Position A and Position B, both of which are normal production variations — not errors.
The S-mint versions are proofs sold in collector sets, struck at San Francisco. They have mirror-like fields and sharp detail that business strikes from Philadelphia and Denver do not share.
Step 2: Check Your 2012 Presidential Dollar Grade

On business strikes, check the president's cheekbone and the highest hair detail first — those spots lose definition before anything else. A coin with full luster and no visible wear across the hair and cheek qualifies for Mint State grades, while a coin with slight friction on those high points is About Uncirculated.
Circulated examples that have been in pocket change will show noticeable flattening on the portrait and on the Statue of Liberty's torch and face on the reverse. Use a same-type comparison image to see the difference between a lightly circulated piece and one graded MS65 or higher.
Proof coins are a different animal. Grade them by the presence or absence of hairlines — fine scratches from handling — rather than by wear from circulation.
A PR65 proof may show a few scattered hairlines visible under magnification but retains full reflective fields.
Step 3: Check 2012 Presidential Dollar Value by Mint and Version
2012 Presidential Dollar — P — Chester Arthur — Position A

This Philadelphia business strike features Chester Arthur's portrait with Position A edge lettering — meaning the incuse text reads normally when the obverse faces up. The presidential service dates on the obverse are 1881–1885, not the coin's minting year.
A USA Coin Book guide estimate places this version at about $6.25 in MS65. Circulated examples are common and typically trade near face value.

Identical to Version 1 in every respect except the edge lettering is in Position B orientation — the incuse text reads normally when the reverse faces up. Both orientations are standard production, not errors.

2012 Presidential Dollar — S — Chester Arthur — proof

San Francisco proof of the Chester Arthur dollar, sold exclusively in collector proof sets. These coins have deeply mirrored fields and crisp design details that business strikes lack.
The S mintmark appears on the edge alongside the date and motto. USA Coin Book places the guide estimate at about $21.00 in PR65.
Because proofs are a manufacturing finish — not a grade above Mint State — they are evaluated separately for hairlines and surface quality rather than circulation wear. This is one of the four proof-only issues in the 2012 Presidential series.

2012 Presidential Dollar — S — Grover Cleveland — first term — proof

The San Francisco proof version of the first-term Grover Cleveland dollar. Mirror-finish fields and sharp incuse edge lettering bearing the S mintmark distinguish it from business strikes.

Verify the 1885–1889 service dates to separate this from the second-term proof.

2012 Presidential Dollar — S — Grover Cleveland — second term — proof

San Francisco proof honoring Grover Cleveland's second term (1893–1897 service dates). Like the other three 2012 S-mint proofs, it was produced for collector sets with mirrored fields and sharp strikes.
USA Coin Book places the guide estimate at about $21.00 in PR65. Cleveland is the only president to appear on two proof dollars in a single year of this series, so confirming the correct service dates is essential for proper attribution.

2012 Presidential Dollar Error List
1. 2012 Presidential Dollar — Missing Edge Lettering
A 2012 Presidential Dollar with missing edge lettering has a completely smooth or plain edge where the date, mintmark and motto should be incuse-stamped. To check, slowly rotate the coin along its entire rim and compare it side by side with a normal 2012 Presidential Dollar that shows full incuse text.
Because the date lives on the edge, a plain-edge coin can be harder to attribute to a specific year without the distinctive presidential portrait or an attributed third-party holder.
Be careful with lookalikes. Edges that have been filed, sanded or deliberately polished can mimic the error.
Pre-2009 Sacagawea dollars also have plain edges by design, so do not confuse those with a true missing-edge-lettering Presidential Dollar. The value of a genuine example depends on condition, how clearly the error is visible, and the specific coin involved.
2. 2012 Presidential Dollar — Weak / Partial Edge Lettering
Weak or partial edge lettering means some of the incuse text around the rim is present but noticeably faint, shallow or interrupted compared to a normal 2012 Presidential Dollar. Examine the full circumference under good light, ideally with magnification, and photograph the areas where lettering fades or drops out.
This error is distinct from coins where the edge just looks slightly shallow due to ordinary wear. Circulated coins naturally lose edge sharpness over time, and deliberate abrasion can also create a misleading appearance.
Compare your coin's edge to a known normal example at the same grade to judge whether the weakness is genuine or just wear. The value of a confirmed weak-edge-lettering coin depends on how pronounced the defect is, the coin's overall condition, and which specific presidential design is affected.
