Which 1871 Liberty Seated Half Dollar Versions Are Worth Money?

  • Carson City (CC) mintmark coins carry significantly higher guide values across all grades, starting at $739 in G4 versus $91 for Philadelphia.
  • Philadelphia Proofs are a separate finish with a guide estimate around $1,540 in PR63.
  • San Francisco coins exist with multiple mintmark shapes; check yours against the dedicated comparison images to identify the exact variety.

Step 1: Identify Your 1871 Liberty Seated Half Dollar Mint Mark and Version

1871 Liberty Seated Half Dollar mint and version comparison

1871 Liberty Seated Half Dollar version comparison

The obverse shows Liberty seated on a rock, holding a shield and a pole with a cap. The reverse features an eagle beneath a motto banner reading IN GOD WE TRUST, with HALF DOL below.

Flip the coin over and look below the eagle for a mintmark. No letter means Philadelphia.

An "S" means San Francisco. "CC" means Carson City.

San Francisco coins come with several mintmark shapes for this year: an Incomplete S, a Very Small Thick Top S, a Very Small Thin Top S and a Small Wide S. You will need magnification and a reference image to tell them apart, because the differences are subtle.

Carson City coins carry a Large CC.

All 1871 halves are struck in 90% silver and 10% copper, weighing 12.44 grams. The heavier 12.50-gram standard did not arrive until the 1873 Arrows redesign.

If your coin has arrows flanking the date, it is not an 1871.

A Proof is a special manufacturing finish with mirrored fields and sharp rims, not a grade above Mint State. Some 1871-CC coins show reflective surfaces from polished dies, but that alone does not make them Proofs.

Step 2: Check Your 1871 Liberty Seated Half Dollar Grade

1871 Liberty Seated Half Dollar numeric grading guide

Start by comparing your coin against the reference image showing different wear stages. On the obverse, check Liberty's head, the knee area and the breast for flattening.

On the reverse, study the eagle's shield and the highest feather tips.

Luster is your friend here. A coin that simply has a weak strike can look flat in the same spots as a worn one, but it will still show original cartwheel luster in protected areas.

Tilt the coin under a single light source and watch for that reflective sweep.

Cleaning, rim dings, scratches and holes all reduce value independently of the wear grade. A cleaned AU coin can sell for less than a crusty, original VF.

When in doubt, leave the coin alone and let a grading service make the call.

Step 3: Check 1871 Liberty Seated Half Dollar Value by Mint and Version

1871 Liberty Seated Half Dollar — Philadelphia — Standard

1871 Liberty Seated Half Dollar Coin — Philadelphia — Standard, obverse and reverse, with date and mint-location details

The standard 1871 Philadelphia half dollar has no mintmark below the reverse eagle. It is the most accessible version for this date.

Guide estimates place it around $91 in Good-4, $204 in VF-20 and $425 near AU-50. Look for even wear across Liberty's head and knee on the obverse and the eagle's breast feathers on the reverse.

Philadelphia strikes from this era can vary in sharpness, so do not mistake a soft strike for heavy wear.

1871 Liberty Seated Half Dollar — Carson City — Large CC

Carson City — Large CC real specimen with large cc, 1871 date closeups

The 1871-CC carries a Large CC mintmark below the eagle and is a genuinely scarce coin. Guide estimates run approximately $739 in G4, $2,130 in VF-20 and a steep $6,848 near AU-50.

Carson City production began just the year before, so surviving populations are small.

Some 1871-CC halves show unusually reflective obverse surfaces from polished dies. That reflective look does not by itself confirm a Proof finish.

The status of a supposed one-sided Proof for this date remains unresolved among specialists. Treat any reflective CC coin as a regular circulation strike unless independently certified otherwise.

1871 Liberty Seated Half Dollar — San Francisco — Incomplete S

1871 Liberty Seated Half Dollar — San Francisco — Incomplete S

The Incomplete S variety shows a San Francisco mintmark that is missing part of its expected punch detail. Under magnification, compare it to a fully formed S from the same era.

The missing section is a die characteristic, not post-strike damage. Aggregate guide estimates for the 1871-S date run about $91 at G4, $204 at VF-20 and $516 near AU-50, though no specific subtype premium is currently adopted for this mintmark shape.

1871 Liberty Seated Half Dollar — San Francisco — Very Small Thick Top S

1871 Liberty Seated Half Dollar — San Francisco — Very Small Thick Top S

This San Francisco variety features a Very Small mintmark S with a noticeably thick upper curve. It is smaller than the standard S punch and sits in the same position below the eagle.

You will need a loupe to distinguish the thick top from the thin-top version. Aggregate baseline estimates for the 1871-S date are approximately $91 in G4, $204 in VF-20 and $516 near AU-50.

No individual subtype premium is adopted at this time, so value depends on collector interest in the specific variety.

1871 Liberty Seated Half Dollar — San Francisco — Very Small Thin Top S

1871 Liberty Seated Half Dollar — San Francisco — Very Small Thin Top S

The Very Small Thin Top S is the companion to the thick-top version. Same tiny size, but the upper serif of the S is thinner and more delicate under magnification.

Side-by-side comparison with the thick-top version is the clearest way to separate them. Aggregate date-and-mint guide estimates place the 1871-S around $91 at G4, $204 at VF-20 and $516 near AU-50, with no separate subtype premium currently adopted.

1871 Liberty Seated Half Dollar — San Francisco — Small Wide S

1871 Liberty Seated Half Dollar — San Francisco — Small Wide S

The Small Wide S is a broader mintmark punch than the very small versions, yet still smaller than a full-size S. The lateral spread of the letter is the giveaway.

Check the spacing between the upper and lower serifs relative to the overall height. As with the other San Francisco subtypes, the aggregate baseline sits near $91 in G4, $204 in VF-20 and $516 near AU-50.

No individual premium for this particular style is currently adopted.

1871 Liberty Seated Half Dollar — Philadelphia Proof

1871 Liberty Seated Half Dollar Coin — Philadelphia Proof, obverse and reverse, with date and mint-location details, with date and mint-location details

Philadelphia Proofs from 1871 were struck with polished dies on specially prepared planchets, producing mirror-like fields and razor-sharp rims. These are a manufacturing finish, not a grade above Mint State.

A guide estimate places the PR-63 level around $1,540.

Genuine Proofs will show squared-off rims and deeply reflective surfaces on both sides. Contrast between frosted devices and mirrored fields can vary.

Any coin offered as a Proof should ideally carry third-party certification, because polished or lightly circulated business strikes can mimic the look.

1871 Liberty Seated Half Dollar Error List

1. 1871 Liberty Seated Half Dollar — Repunched Date

Repunched dates on the 1871 half dollar are documented for both the Carson City and Philadelphia issues. The diagnostic is displaced remnants of one or more date numerals, most visibly the "71," where an earlier impression sits slightly offset from the final position.

Under magnification you will see traces of the first punch as thickened or doubled serifs on the affected digits.

Do not confuse this with machine doubling, which produces flat, shelf-like distortion rather than rounded secondary impressions. Damage from contact or corrosion can also create misleading shapes near the date.

Value depends on the coin's overall condition, which mint produced it and how clearly the repunching shows. No specific numerical premium is adopted here.

2. 1871 Liberty Seated Half Dollar — Misplaced Date

A misplaced-date variety is recorded for the 1871 Philadelphia half dollar. On these coins, part of a date digit appears outside the normal date position, sometimes protruding into the denticles or the field near the rim.

The misplaced numeral was impressed during an early hubbing step before the die was correctly aligned.

To spot it, examine the area around the base of the date and the adjacent denticles under magnification. Compare against a normal 1871 to see whether the stray element is part of the original design or post-strike damage.

Wear, tooling marks and rim hits can mimic the look. Value depends on the coin's grade and how prominent the misplaced digit is.

No adopted price range is available for this variety.

3. 1871 Liberty Seated Half Dollar — Doubled Die Obverse

A Doubled Die Obverse variety is cataloged for the 1871 San Francisco half dollar paired with the Incomplete S mintmark. The doubling appears on obverse design elements such as lettering or the date, produced when the working die received a second, slightly offset hub impression.

The Incomplete S mintmark is a separate feature of the reverse die and does not by itself indicate a DDO. You need to confirm doubling on the obverse independently.

Look for split serifs or thickened lettering under magnification.

Machine doubling is the most common lookalike. It leaves flat, shelf-like distortion rather than the rounded, separated secondary image of a true doubled die.

Worn die contours and light reflections can also fool the eye. Value depends on condition and the strength of the doubling.

No specific price premium is adopted.

4. 1871 Liberty Seated Half Dollar — Die Crack / Die Chip

Die cracks are documented on the 1871 Carson City half dollar reverse, including an inherited crack through the word AMERICA, sometimes described as crossing the MER area. On the coin, a die crack appears as a thin raised line because metal fills the crevice in the broken die during striking.

To identify it, look for a fine raised ridge running across the reverse lettering. It should be raised above the field surface, not incised.

Incuse scratches, corrosion lines and surface debris can look similar but sit into the surface rather than above it. The crack's position and length help confirm the specific die.

Value depends on the coin's grade, the crack's visibility and collector demand. No numerical premium is currently adopted for this variety.

5. 1871 Liberty Seated Half Dollar — Incomplete Mintmark

The Incomplete Mintmark variety on the 1871 San Francisco half dollar shows an S that is missing a portion of its expected shape. Part of the mintmark punch was broken or filled before it was impressed into the die, leaving a permanently incomplete letter on every coin struck from that die.

Compare the suspect mintmark against a fully formed S from the same year. The missing section should be consistent and clean-edged, not the result of post-strike wear or damage.

A worn coin can lose mintmark detail gradually, but that produces soft, rounded erosion rather than a sharply absent segment.

Condition, the specific missing area and overall eye appeal all affect value. No numerical price premium is currently adopted for this variety.
