1894 Barber Quarter Coin Value: How Much Is It Worth?
The 1894 Barber Quarter is a solid 90% silver coin with four distinct versions collectors need to sort through. Guide estimates from USA Coin Book range from about $24.00 in well-worn grades up to $799.00 for a proof example, depending on which mint struck your coin and what condition it survives in.
Mint, finish, and honest wear determine where your quarter falls in that spread.

Which 1894 Barber Quarter Versions Are Worth Money?
- 1894 Proof (PR63) carries a USA Coin Book guide estimate of $799.00, the highest listed anchor for this date.
- 1894-O in MS63 condition reaches a guide estimate of $730.00, well above its Philadelphia counterpart at the same grade.
- 1894-S at MS63 carries a guide estimate of $675.00, making all three mint versions worth checking in higher grades.
- Even a well-worn 1894 Barber Quarter from any mint starts around $24.00 at G4 because of its silver content and collector demand.
- Confirm your coin's mint and finish first; damage, cleaning, or a bright polished surface does not make a coin rare.
Step 1: Identify Your 1894 Barber Quarter Mint Mark and Version

Flip the coin over and look at the reverse, directly below the eagle's tail feathers and above the words QUARTER DOLLAR. If there is no small letter there, it was struck in Philadelphia.
A tiny O means New Orleans, and an S means San Francisco. There is no D mintmark for this year.
All four versions share the same composition: 90% silver and 10% copper, weighing 6.25 grams. The obverse shows Charles Barber's laureate Liberty head, while the reverse features a heraldic eagle with a shield.
The Philadelphia mint also produced proof strikes in 1894. These are a separate collectible version.
A proof has a distinctly different surface quality from a regular business strike; do not assume a shiny coin is a proof just because it looks nice.
Step 2: Check Your 1894 Barber Quarter Grade

Start with the hair detail above Liberty's forehead and along the cheek. On a lightly circulated coin those areas flatten first, softening the individual strands.
The laurel wreath is another early wear point.
On the reverse, check the eagle's breast feathers, the tops of the wings, and the tail. These high spots lose definition before the surrounding design does.
The word LIBERTY on the headband is a popular quick check, but do not rely on it alone. A weakly struck coin can show mushy letters even without real wear.
Look at overall luster and surface texture alongside letter sharpness.
Use the comparison image to match your coin against known grade examples for the same Barber Quarter type. Original, untouched surfaces with natural toning are what you want.
A coin that has been cleaned or polished may look bright but will typically grade lower with professional services.
Step 3: Check 1894 Barber Quarter Value by Mint and Version
1894 Barber Quarter

The 1894 Philadelphia quarter has no mintmark on the reverse. In heavily circulated Good-4 condition, USA Coin Book estimates it around $24.00.
Move up the condition ladder and values climb: an MS60 example sits at roughly $309.00, while a choice MS63 reaches about $536.00.
Before comparing your coin against those figures, make sure the surfaces are original. Cleaning strips natural toning and leaves hairlines visible under magnification, which drags the effective grade down.
Strike quality matters too; a soft strike is not the same as wear.

1894 Barber Quarter — PR

The 1894 proof Barber Quarter was a special striking made at Philadelphia for collectors, not for circulation. These carry no mintmark, same as the regular issue, so the surfaces themselves are the giveaway.
Look for mirror-like fields and sharply detailed devices with squared-off rims.
At PR63, the USA Coin Book guide estimate is $799.00, the highest anchor for any 1894 quarter version. That said, haze, fingerprints, and hairlines all matter enormously on proof surfaces.
A proof that has been mishandled can lose much of its premium.
Coin Value Lookup is a good place to start when you want to look up guide values for other Barber Quarters or different coin series. It keeps things organized so you are not hunting across a dozen tabs.

1894 Barber Quarter — O

The 1894-O was struck at the New Orleans Mint. You will find a small O on the reverse below the eagle's tail.
In Good-4 condition, the USA Coin Book guide puts it at $24.00, on par with the Philadelphia issue.
Higher grades are where the O-mint pulls ahead. An MS60 example is estimated at $416.00, and MS63 reaches $730.00, nearly $200 more than a Philadelphia coin in the same grade.
Original surfaces and strong detail are critical at those levels; any sign of cleaning or damage will significantly reduce what a collector is willing to pay.

1894 Barber Quarter — S

Look for a small S mintmark on the reverse to confirm a San Francisco strike. The 1894-S starts at the familiar $24.00 in Good-4 condition.
At MS60 it matches the New Orleans issue at $416.00, and at MS63 the USA Coin Book guide estimates $675.00.
That MS63 figure is slightly below the 1894-O but still well above the Philadelphia version. As with any Barber Quarter, original surfaces with natural patina are what serious buyers want.
A coin that has been dipped or polished will look deceptively bright and may fool you into thinking it grades higher than it actually does.
