1895 Barber Quarter Coin Value: How Much Is It Worth?
The 1895 Barber Quarter is a 90% silver coin featuring Charles Barber's laureate Liberty head on the obverse and a heraldic eagle on the reverse. Guide estimates for this year range from about $24.00 to $1,196.00, but that spread depends entirely on which mint struck your coin, what condition it is in, and whether it is a proof.
A worn Philadelphia piece and a choice uncirculated New Orleans coin are very different animals.

Which 1895 Barber Quarter Versions Are Worth Money?
- 1895-S quarters carry a guide estimate of $1,196.00 in MS63 and $35.00 even in well-worn G4 condition, making them worth checking at any grade.
- 1895-O quarters also reach $1,196.00 at the MS63 level according to USA Coin Book estimates, with even low-grade examples starting around $27.00.
- 1895 Proof quarters carry a guide estimate of $799.00 in PR63 — genuine proofs are scarce and should not be confused with polished circulation strikes.
- Philadelphia business strikes are the most affordable entry point, starting at about $24.00 in G4, but uncirculated examples still carry meaningful silver-era premiums.
Step 1: Identify Your 1895 Barber Quarter Mint Mark and Version

The 1895 Barber Quarter comes in four branches: Philadelphia (no mintmark), New Orleans (O), San Francisco (S), and a Philadelphia proof issue. To find the mintmark, flip the coin over and look at the reverse just below the eagle's tail feathers and above the "QUARTER DOLLAR" text.
No letter there means Philadelphia.
All versions are struck in 90% silver and 10% copper, weighing 6.25 grams. They share the same laureate Liberty head obverse and heraldic eagle reverse.
A proof is not simply a shiny coin — it is a specific manufacturing process with mirror-like fields, and confusing a polished business strike for a proof is a common mistake.
If you see a D mintmark, you do not have an 1895 quarter. Denver did not strike Barber Quarters until later.
Double-check the date if a D appears.
Step 2: Check Your 1895 Barber Quarter Grade

Start with Liberty's hair above the forehead and along the cheek. On a well-worn coin, these areas flatten first and the wreath details soften.
On the reverse, check the eagle's breast, the tops of the wings, and the tail feathers.
The word LIBERTY on the headband is a popular quick check, but do not rely on it alone. Combine it with overall surface wear and remaining luster.
A coin can show a full LIBERTY yet still have significant friction elsewhere.
Compare your coin against the reference comparison image provided. Look at luster together with wear — a weak original strike can leave soft detail on a coin that was never circulated, so do not assume every soft spot means heavy use.
Cleaned coins often look unnaturally bright and lose their original skin, which reduces collector value regardless of how sharp the details remain.
Step 3: Check 1895 Barber Quarter Value by Mint and Version
1895 Barber Quarter

The 1895 Philadelphia business strike carries no mintmark on the reverse. In well-worn G4 condition, USA Coin Book estimates place it around $24.00.
Step up to MS60 and the guide jumps to $353.00, with MS63 examples reaching about $565.00. These are guide estimates, not guaranteed offers.
Before comparing grades, confirm you actually have a no-mintmark coin and not a worn O or S where the letter is barely visible. Original surfaces matter here — cleaning or damage will pull the value down regardless of how much detail remains.

1895 Barber Quarter — PR

The 1895 Proof was struck at Philadelphia using polished dies and specially prepared planchets. There is no mintmark.
USA Coin Book estimates place a PR63 example at about $799.00. These are guide estimates, not guaranteed offers.
Proof Barber Quarters have deeply mirrored fields that differ from the cartwheel luster of a business strike. Hairlines from improper storage or cleaning are the most common condition issue on surviving proofs, and they directly affect the grade.
Surface haze also appears on pieces stored in certain holders over the decades. Do not assume a shiny coin is a proof — the die finish and edge characteristics are distinct from a regular strike that someone polished.

1895 Barber Quarter — O

The 1895-O was struck at the New Orleans Mint. Look for a small "O" on the reverse below the eagle's tail.
In G4, USA Coin Book estimates this version at around $27.00. At MS60 the guide rises to $507.00, and at MS63 it reaches $1,196.00.
These are guide estimates, not guaranteed offers.
Coin Value Lookup is a good starting point if you want to look up guides for other dates and mints in the Barber Quarter series or check values across different denominations.
New Orleans coins sometimes show softer strikes than their Philadelphia counterparts, so do not mistake weak detail for wear. Confirm original surfaces before assuming a high grade.

1895 Barber Quarter — S

The 1895-S carries an "S" mintmark on the reverse, indicating the San Francisco Mint. Even in heavily worn G4 condition, this version carries a USA Coin Book guide estimate of about $35.00 — the highest starting point of the three business-strike mints this year.
MS60 examples are estimated at $531.00, and MS63 reaches $1,196.00. These are guide estimates, not guaranteed offers.
Original surfaces, strike quality, and the absence of cleaning all play into the final assessment. Match the mint, confirm the date, and then compare wear honestly against known grade references before drawing conclusions about value.
