1883 Liberty Seated Quarter Coin Value: How Much Is It Worth?
The 1883 Liberty Seated Quarter is a late-date issue from a long-running silver series that ended just eight years later. Guide estimates from USA Coin Book range from $258.00 in well-worn condition up to $1,072.00 for uncirculated examples, depending on version and grade.
Two distinct versions exist for this year — a regular business strike and a proof — and your coin's condition and finish determine where it falls in that spread.

Which 1883 Liberty Seated Quarter Versions Are Worth Money?
- The 1883 business strike lists at $1,072.00 in MS63 per USA Coin Book — uncirculated survivors with original surfaces carry the strongest premium for this date.
- The 1883 Proof lists at $938.00 in PR63, reflecting its limited-production collector finish — confirm proof characteristics before assuming you have one.
Step 1: Identify Your 1883 Liberty Seated Quarter Mint Mark and Version

The 1883 quarter was struck only at Philadelphia, so there is no mintmark on a genuine example. On quarters from other years in this series, a small letter (O, S, or CC) appears on the reverse beneath the eagle — but for 1883, you should see a clean field there.
The coin is 90% silver and 10% copper, weighing 6.25 grams. If yours feels noticeably light or sticks to a magnet, that is a red flag.
The obverse shows Lady Liberty seated on a rock, holding a pole topped with a cap, with a shield at her side. The reverse features an eagle with outstretched wings and the motto "In God We Trust" on a banner above.
Both versions this year — business strike and proof — share this same design, so the distinction comes down to how the coin was manufactured, not what is depicted.
Coin Value Lookup is a good starting point if you are trying to figure out what other coins in your collection might be worth. You can look up quarter values and other denominations by year.
Step 2: Check Your 1883 Liberty Seated Quarter Grade

Start with Liberty's head, knee, and the horizontal lines on her shield — these are the first areas to show friction on a circulated coin. On the reverse, check the eagle's breast feathers and the tops of the wings.
A coin grading around Good-4 will have Liberty's outline visible but most interior detail worn smooth. Move up to Mint State and you should see full luster with no wear on the high points at all.
Do not confuse a weak strike with heavy wear. Some 1883 quarters left the press with soft detail at the centers, even though the coin was never circulated.
If the surrounding luster is intact and unbroken, a flat area may be strike-related rather than damage.
Cleaned coins are common in this series. A bright, unnaturally shiny surface with fine hairlines visible under magnification usually means someone polished the coin at some point.
That hurts collector value significantly. Compare your coin's surface to the reference image to judge both wear and originality together.
Step 3: Check 1883 Liberty Seated Quarter Value by Mint and Version
1883 Liberty Seated Quarter

The 1883 business-strike quarter was produced at Philadelphia with no mintmark. It weighs 6.25 grams in 90% silver.
USA Coin Book estimates place it at $258.00 in G4, $834.00 in MS60, and $1,072.00 in MS63.
These are guide estimates, not guaranteed buy prices. Actual value depends heavily on the coin's original surfaces.
A piece with natural toning and sharp detail will command more interest than one that has been cleaned or has rim dings. Before you compare grades, make sure yours matches this version — Philadelphia mint, business strike, With Motto reverse.

1883 Liberty Seated Quarter — PR

The 1883 Proof quarter was also struck at Philadelphia with no mintmark, but it was made using a different process — polished dies and planchets, struck multiple times to bring up sharp detail. The result is a coin with mirror-like fields and crisp devices that looks nothing like a regular business strike, even a nice one.
USA Coin Book estimates PR63 at $938.00. A shiny circulated coin is not a proof.
Genuine proofs show deeply reflective surfaces in the fields between the design elements, and the rims tend to be squared and sharp. Hairlines from old cleanings and surface haze are the main condition issues that separate a PR63 from higher grades.
If you think you have a proof, tilt it under a single light source and look for that liquid-mirror effect in the flat areas.
