1888 Liberty Seated Quarter Coin Value: How Much Is It Worth?
The 1888 Liberty Seated Quarter is a late-date issue in a series that ran from 1838 to 1891. It was struck in 90% silver at two mints, with a small proof run for collectors.
USA Coin Book guide estimates place these quarters between $46.00 and $1,136.00 depending on which mint produced your coin, whether it is a business strike or proof, and what condition it is in. That is not a single price for every 1888 quarter — your specific version and grade determine where in that range a coin falls.

Which 1888 Liberty Seated Quarter Versions Are Worth Money?
- 1888 Philadelphia business strike: USA Coin Book estimates up to $1,136.00 at MS63, making it the highest guide value among the three branches at that grade.
- 1888-S San Francisco: Guide estimates reach $938.00 at MS63, though well-worn examples start around $46.00 at G4.
- 1888 Proof: Guide estimate of $938.00 at PR63 — a collector-finish coin with mirror fields and sharp detail, distinct from any business strike.
- Check your mintmark first; the difference between Philadelphia and San Francisco matters at every grade level.
Step 1: Identify Your 1888 Liberty Seated Quarter Mint Mark and Version

Three collectible branches exist for 1888: the Philadelphia business strike, the Philadelphia proof, and the San Francisco business strike. No other mints produced Liberty Seated Quarters this year — no O or CC versions.
Philadelphia coins carry no mintmark at all. San Francisco coins have a small "S" on the reverse, located below the eagle.
If you see a different letter, you are probably looking at a different year or denomination.
All 1888 quarters are struck in 90% silver and 10% copper, weighing 6.25 grams. The obverse shows Liberty seated on a rock, and the reverse displays an eagle with the motto "In God We Trust" on a banner above.
To tell a proof from a business strike, look at the surfaces rather than just shininess. Proofs were made with polished dies and planchets, producing squared-up rims and mirror-like fields.
A shiny circulated coin that has been cleaned is not a proof.
Step 2: Check Your 1888 Liberty Seated Quarter Grade

Start with the high points of Liberty: the head, the breast area, the knee, and the lines on the shield. These wear first.
On the reverse, check the eagle's breast feathers and upper wing tips.
A coin in Good (G4) condition will show Liberty's outline and the date clearly, but most fine detail is smoothed away. Move up to Mint State (MS60) and you should see full luster with no wear on those high points, though contact marks and bag scuffs are normal at that grade.
By MS63, luster is strong and marks are fewer and less distracting. Compare your coin to the grading image for this type, paying attention to both wear and original surface quality together.
One trap with this series: weak strikes can mimic wear. A genuinely uncirculated coin may lack sharp detail at the center if the dies were not perfectly aligned or sufficiently pressured.
Do not assume a soft head or flat eagle breast means the coin circulated. Look at the fields and high-point luster before deciding.
Cleaning is the other big pitfall. Hairlines from polishing, an unnaturally bright surface, or a whitish haze all suggest the coin has been cleaned, and that will significantly reduce its collector value compared to a coin with original toning.
Step 3: Check 1888 Liberty Seated Quarter Value by Mint and Version
1888 Liberty Seated Quarter

The 1888 Philadelphia quarter has no mintmark anywhere on the coin. It was struck for circulation in 90% silver at 6.25 grams.
USA Coin Book guide estimates place this version at $321.00 in G4, rising to $868.00 at MS60 and $1,136.00 at MS63. These are retail guide estimates, not guaranteed offers.
Original surfaces matter a lot here. A coin that has been cleaned or damaged will not bring guide-level prices, even if the detail looks sharp.
When evaluating yours, confirm the mint first (no letter below the eagle), then compare the wear honestly to grading references for this type.

1888 Liberty Seated Quarter — PR

The 1888 proof quarter was a Philadelphia-only product, struck with specially prepared dies and planchets for sale directly to collectors. There is no mintmark.
USA Coin Book estimates this version at $938.00 in PR63.
Proof status is about manufacturing method, not just appearance. Genuine proofs show mirror-like fields, sharp squared rims, and fully struck detail.
Surface haze, hairlines from mishandling, and fingerprint residue are all common on proofs of this era and will affect the grade and value.

1888 Liberty Seated Quarter — S

The 1888-S was struck at the San Francisco Mint and carries a small "S" mintmark on the reverse, below the eagle. Same 90% silver composition and 6.25-gram weight as the Philadelphia issue.
USA Coin Book guide estimates run from $46.00 at G4 up to $459.00 at MS60 and $938.00 at MS63. That is a big jump between grades, which tells you condition drives the value here.
A heavily worn example is affordable; a clean, original uncirculated piece is another story entirely.
As with all business strikes in this series, look for original surfaces. Cleaning strips the natural toning and leaves telltale hairlines that experienced buyers spot immediately.
