2020 Presidential Dollar Coin Value: How Much Is It Worth?

2020 Presidential Dollar Coin Value: How Much Is It Worth?

The 2020 Presidential Dollar honors George H. W.

Bush, the 41st President. Guide estimates for business-strike examples run around $12.00 at the MS65 grade level, though that figure is not a guaranteed offer.

Before assuming your coin is special, identify the mint, finish and edge-lettering orientation. Most circulated pieces trade near face value, while the S-mint reverse proof from the Coin and Chronicles set is the branch collectors watch for.

Fast Way to Identify Your 2020 Presidential Dollar

Snap clear photos of both the front and back of your 2020 Presidential Dollar and upload them for a preliminary identification. This helps sort the mint, design and finish so you know which version you actually have.

It will not authenticate errors, assign an exact grade or guarantee a price, but it is a solid first step.

Which 2020 Presidential Dollar Versions Are Worth Money?

  • S-mint reverse proof from the Coin and Chronicles set — the only collector-finish dollar in the 2020 series, distinct from the common P and D business strikes.
  • Business strikes in high Mint State grades (MS65 and above) from either Philadelphia or Denver — guide estimates sit at about $12.00 at MS65, well above face value.

Step 1: Identify Your 2020 Presidential Dollar Mint Mark and Version

2020 Presidential Dollars Coin mint and version comparison

2020 Presidential Dollars version comparison

The year 2020 appears on the edge, not on the face. The dates you see flanking George H.

W. Bush's portrait — 1989–1993 — are his presidential service years, not the coin's issue date.

That trips people up constantly.

Flip the coin to its edge and look for incuse lettering: the date, mintmark (P, D or S) and "E PLURIBUS UNUM" are stamped there. A "P" means Philadelphia, "D" means Denver, and "S" means San Francisco.

Position A versus Position B refers to the orientation of that edge lettering relative to the obverse. Hold the obverse upright and read the edge from the bottom: if the lettering reads normally, it is Position A; if it is upside-down, Position B.

Both positions are routine production, not errors.

The coin is manganese-brass clad — 88.5% copper, 6% zinc, 3.5% manganese and 2% nickel — weighing 8.10 grams. It has a distinctive golden color.

The reverse shows the Statue of Liberty, standard across all Presidential Dollars.

The S-mint reverse proof has a very different look: frosted fields and mirrored raised devices, the opposite of a normal proof. It was issued in a collector set, not released into circulation.

Step 2: Check Your 2020 Presidential Dollar Grade

2020 Presidential Dollars numeric grading guide

Start with the portrait's cheek and the hair above the ear — these are the highest points and the first to show wear. On the reverse, check the torch and crown of the Statue of Liberty for flatness or rubbing.

A coin that spent time in pocket change will show dull, scuffed cheekbones and mushy hair detail. An About Uncirculated piece still has most of its original luster but shows light friction on those same high spots.

At MS65 (Mint State, gem quality), you should see full original luster with only minor contact marks that don't distract the eye. Compare your coin to the grading image to judge where it falls.

For the reverse proof finish, grading focuses on hairlines and handling marks on the mirrored devices rather than traditional wear. A proof finish is a manufacturing method, not a grade above Mint State, so keep them in separate mental categories.

Step 3: Check 2020 Presidential Dollar Value by Mint and Version

2020 Presidential Dollar — P — George H. W. Bush — Position A

2020 Presidential Dollar Coin — P — George H. W. Bush — Position A, obverse and reverse, with date and mint-location details

This is the Philadelphia-mint business strike with Position A edge lettering. Hold the obverse facing you and read the edge from the bottom — the incuse text reads normally.

The coin weighs 8.10 grams in the standard manganese-brass clad composition.

Guide estimates place this version at roughly $12.00 in MS65 grade. That is a guide figure from USA Coin Book, not a guaranteed sale price.

Most examples pulled from circulation will grade well below MS65 and are worth face value.

2020 Presidential Dollar — P — George H. W. Bush — Position B

2020 Presidential Dollar Coin — P — George H. W. Bush — Position B, obverse and reverse, with date and mint-location details

Same Philadelphia mint, same design, but the edge lettering is oriented the other way — Position B. If you hold the obverse upright and read the edge from the bottom, the text appears upside-down.

This is completely normal manufacturing variation, not an error.

Guide estimates also place this version at about $12.00 in MS65. Position B does not carry a premium or penalty versus Position A under normal circumstances.

The key to value here is condition, not orientation.

2020 Presidential Dollar Coin — D — George H. W. Bush — Position A, obverse and reverse, with date and mint-location details

Denver-mint production, Position A edge lettering. The "D" mintmark is incuse on the edge alongside the date and motto.

Same manganese-brass clad composition, same 8.10-gram weight.

Coin Value Lookup is a useful starting point if you want to look up guides for other Presidential Dollar years or denominations while you are sorting your coins.

At MS65, guide estimates sit around $12.00. Circulated examples are common and trade at or near face value.

2020 Presidential Dollar — D — George H. W. Bush — Position B

2020 Presidential Dollar Coin — D — George H. W. Bush — Position B, obverse and reverse, with date and mint-location details

Denver mint, Position B. The only distinction from Version 3 is that the edge lettering reads inverted when the obverse faces you.

Again, this is standard — the Mint produced coins in both orientations without preference.

The guide estimate is the same $12.00 at MS65. Don't let anyone charge you extra because the edge text is "upside-down." It is not an error, it is not scarce, and it does not change the value.

2020 Presidential Dollar — S — George H. W. Bush — reverse proof

2020 Presidential Dollar Coin — S — George H. W. Bush — reverse proof, obverse and reverse, with date and mint-location details

This is the S-mint reverse proof, struck at San Francisco for the George H. W.

Bush Coin and Chronicles set. A reverse proof flips the usual proof contrast: the fields are frosted while the raised design elements are mirrored.

The effect is distinctive and immediately visible compared to a business strike.

The dollar itself is the same manganese-brass clad metal as the P and D issues — do not confuse it with any silver medal that may have been included in the same set. No supported numeric price range is available for this version, so value depends on the individual coin's authenticated identity, condition and any error presence.

Professional grading and authentication are the best route if you believe you have a high-quality example.

2020 Presidential Dollar Error List

1. 2020 Presidential Dollar — Missing Edge Lettering

A missing-edge-lettering error means the incuse date, mintmark and motto that should appear around the coin's edge are entirely absent. To check, slowly rotate the coin under good light and compare it side by side with a normal 2020 Presidential Dollar.

On a genuine error, the edge will be smooth or plain where text should be.

Because the date lives on the edge, attributing a plain-edge coin to a specific year can require the distinctive annual portrait or a previously attributed holder. Be cautious: coins with edges that have been filed, sanded or polished can mimic this error.

Pre-2009 Sacagawea dollars have a plain edge by design, so do not confuse those with a Presidential Dollar error.

No specific price range is available. Value depends on the coin's condition, the completeness of the missing lettering and professional authentication.

2. 2020 Presidential Dollar — Off-Center Strike

An off-center strike happens when the blank is not properly seated between the dies, producing a displaced design and an unstruck crescent of bare metal along one side. The percentage of off-center shift and whether the date or key design elements remain visible both affect desirability.

Look for a clean crescent of blank planchet — not a ragged clip or post-mint damage. A clipped planchet has a curved bite from the blank-cutting process, while post-mint flattening or one-sided die misalignment can also create misleading appearances.

Genuine off-center errors show the entire design shifted uniformly.

No numerical price is available for this error on 2020 Presidential Dollars. The degree of the strike displacement, overall condition and professional verification all factor into what a collector would pay.

3. 2020 Presidential Dollar — Wrong Planchet / Off-Metal Strike

A wrong-planchet error occurs when a Presidential Dollar design is struck on a blank intended for a different denomination or coin series. The result is a coin whose weight, diameter or edge does not match a standard 2020 Presidential Dollar.

To investigate, weigh the coin on a precise scale and measure its diameter. Compare both figures to the normal 8.10-gram, 26.5-mm specification.

If the numbers are off and the design shows incomplete strike or unusual color, you may have something worth professional examination.

Watch out for lookalikes. Coins that have been plated, corroded, acid-treated or deliberately altered can appear to be the wrong metal.

Surface damage is not a wrong planchet. No supported price range is available; value depends on the specific blank, condition and authenticated confirmation of the error.
